Overview

Carnival Legend is a Spirit-class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line. Built in Helsinki, Finland, and delivered in August 2002, she was the third Spirit-class ship built for Carnival itself — after Carnival Spirit and Carnival Pride — in a design family shared with sister brand Costa Cruises. The Spirit class was Carnival's Panamax-sized answer to the early-2000s race for ever-larger ships: at 85,942 GT she is substantially smaller than the mega-ships that followed, but she was arranged to feel spacious, with an unusually high proportion of outside and balcony cabins for her era, and a service speed of 22 knots that Carnival marketed as allowing longer itineraries to be sailed in fewer days.

She has carried one name and one operator throughout her career, and remains in active service more than two decades after delivery.

Key specifications

The dataset records Carnival Legend at 85,942 GT, 292.5 m long and 32.3 m in beam, with a maximum capacity of 2,680 passengers and a speed of 22.0 knots. Her usual double-occupancy figure is widely quoted as 2,124 passengers in 1,062 staterooms. Propulsion is diesel-electric: six Wärtsilä 9L46D engines generating a combined 62,370 kW, driving two ABB Azipod units of 17.6 MW each — podded propulsion that was still a modern feature in 2002. Some published sources quote her tonnage as 88,500 GT; the dataset figure of 85,942 GT is the measured figure carried in Carnival's own fleet listings, and is the one used here.

Design and construction

Legend was built by Kvaerner Masa-Yards at its Helsinki yard — the dataset names the Hietalahti shipyard — as hull number 501, at a reported cost of about US$375 million. Production began in October 2000 and hull assembly started in the covered building dock in April 2001. She was the fourth ship in the combined Spirit-class series built at Helsinki for Carnival Corporation brands, following Costa Atlantica (2000), Carnival Spirit and Carnival Pride (both 2001).

The Spirit-class design is distinguished by its slim, yacht-like hull form for a ship of its tonnage, a high balcony ratio — around 80 per cent of staterooms face the sea and most of those have balconies — and Azipod propulsion in place of conventional shafts and rudders.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

The ship was launched on 17 December 2001 — the dataset records 2002, her completion and service-entry year — and was delivered on 14 August 2002. She was christened at Harwich, England, on 21 August 2002 by her godmother, the British actress Dame Judi Dench. A much-retold story holds that the champagne bottle did not break cleanly at the first attempt during the ceremony. Her maiden voyage, recorded in the dataset as 24 August 2002, took her into the North American market for which she was built.

Career by operator

Carnival Legend has never changed name or operator:

Years Name Operator

Her registry, by contrast, has moved: she was registered in Panama from 2002 to 2014, in Malta from 2014 to 2021, and in the Bahamas thereafter. Within Carnival's fleet she has been rotated through the line's standard deployment regions over two decades — the Caribbean from Florida ports including Tampa, Alaska seasons, a period of seasonal deployment to Australia, and European seasons — a typical mid-fleet working pattern rather than a series of distinct careers.

Onboard character

Legend's interiors belong to Carnival's themed "Fun Ship" era, designed around a nine-deck-high atrium and a sequence of individually styled lounges, bars and restaurants. Her original dining arrangement paired a two-level main dining room with an intimate supper club under a large red glass dome — the steakhouse format Carnival was then rolling out across the fleet. The era-defining features of the design were the things the Spirit class itself introduced to Carnival: the high balcony count, the corkscrew water slide, the wedding chapel, and public rooms spread across 12 passenger decks in a ship deliberately kept narrower and faster than the mega-ships of rival lines.

Major refits and incidents

The ship received a major refurbishment in 2014, adding many of the branded venues then being fitted across the Carnival fleet. Her incident record is headed by two contacts in the same port a decade apart. On 30 September 2009, departing her berth at Cozumel, Mexico, heavy winds pushed her against the docked Enchantment of the Seas; Legend sustained damage to open deck areas and broken glass, but both ships continued their voyages. On 20 December 2019, again at Cozumel, the manoeuvring Carnival Glory struck the already-moored Legend, causing minor hull damage above the waterline and minor injuries aboard Glory; wind and currents were blamed.

She has also suffered propulsion trouble: a mechanical problem forced a slow return to Tampa in February 2010, and an Azipod fault in March 2013 disrupted several sailings. In February 2018, violent brawls during a South Pacific sailing led police to remove nine passengers at an unscheduled stop at Eden, New South Wales.

Sister ships and class

The Spirit class comprises six Helsinki-built ships: Costa Atlantica (2000), Carnival Spirit (2001), Carnival Pride (2001), Carnival Legend (2002), Costa Mediterranea (2003) and Carnival Miracle (2004). Built for two Carnival Corporation brands to a common Panamax hull, the class is notable for its Azipod propulsion, high balcony ratio and comparatively slender lines.

Fate and where she is now

Carnival Legend remains in active service with Carnival Cruise Line under her original name — one of the longer-serving members of a fleet that has steadily retired its earlier generations around her.
