Overview

MSC Euribia is a Meraviglia Plus-class cruise ship built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire, France, and delivered to MSC Cruises on 31 May 2023 as the 22nd ship in the fleet. She is the third and last of the Meraviglia Plus trio and, more significantly, MSC's second LNG-powered ship and the ship the line presented as its most environmentally advanced vessel — "built for the future" was its launch slogan. Almost everything about her public identity is tied to that claim: her fuel, her painted hull, her goddess's name, even her naming city and the net-zero positioning voyage she made to reach it. She is also, at 184,011 GT, among the largest cruise ships ever built in France.

Key specifications

MSC Euribia measures 184,011 GT, 331.43 metres in length and 43 metres in beam, with a height of 65 metres. She carries 6,327 passengers at maximum capacity and 1,711 crew. Her dataset service speed is 22.8 knots; on sea trials she reached 23.5 knots. Her yard number at Saint-Nazaire was V34. She is powered by LNG-capable dual-fuel machinery with energy-efficiency systems including waste-heat recovery, an underwater radiated-noise management system to reduce effects on marine life, advanced wastewater treatment and shore-power connectivity. She is registered at Valletta, Malta.

Design and construction

The Meraviglia Plus design is a lengthened development of the Meraviglia class, built around an internal promenade — here the Galleria Euribia, a 112-metre covered street under an LED sky screen — with the ship's social life arranged along it. MSC ordered the ship in 2018; construction began in June 2020 and the keel was laid on 28 June 2021. The design brief was environmental performance as much as capacity: the class's machinery was specified for LNG from the outset, and the ship was promoted on delivery as the most energy-efficient cruise ship design of its time. Her most visible design decision is outside the hull: a full-length painted fresco, #SaveTheSea, by the German graphic artist Alex Flämig, winner of an international competition run by MSC — making Euribia the rare modern cruise ship whose livery is a single commissioned artwork.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

The ship was floated out at Saint-Nazaire on 22 June 2022. Her name invokes Eurybia, the ancient Greek goddess who was said to master the seas by harnessing the winds, weather and constellations — chosen, the line said, because the ship was meant to master the deployment of sustainable technology in the same spirit. After sea trials in April 2023 she was delivered on 31 May 2023, and sailed from Saint-Nazaire to Copenhagen on what MSC described as the first net-zero greenhouse-gas positioning voyage by a cruise ship. She was named at Copenhagen on 8 June 2023 by her godmother Sophia Loren — Loren's nineteenth MSC christening — in a ceremony held in the ship's 945-seat Delphi Theatre, and she carried her first guests on 9 June 2023.

She has had a single name and operator; during construction she was known within the yard programme as hull V34 (the project name "MSC Vista" appears in some tracking sources for the pre-delivery period).

Onboard character

Euribia continues the mature MSC formula at its largest French-built scale: the galleria promenade as social spine, a covered main pool for northern climates, a large open-deck pool and aquapark complex, and the MSC Yacht Club ship-within-a-ship enclave. What distinguishes her within the fleet is the extent to which her character is worn on the outside — the #SaveTheSea hull fresco, depicting the marine ecosystem in saturated colour, turns the ship herself into the message, and makes her recognisable in any port at a glance in a way no sister can match.

Major refits and incidents

The ship is too young to have been refitted. One serious geopolitical episode marks her early career: in March 2026, during the 2026 Iran war, MSC Euribia was one of six cruise ships stranded in the Gulf when Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, and MSC chartered Emirates flights to bring some passengers home from Dubai. On 17 April 2026 she transited the strait out of Dubai in company with other departing cruise ships, including Mein Schiff 4 and Mein Schiff 5, which had been stranded at Doha; a splash was reported near one ship of the group during the transit and a containership was struck by a projectile, but MSC reported Euribia passed through safely and returned to Europe.

Sister ships and class

The Meraviglia Plus class comprises MSC Grandiosa (2019), MSC Virtuosa (2021) and MSC Euribia (2023), all built at Saint-Nazaire as enlarged derivatives of the two-ship Meraviglia class. Euribia differs from her sisters chiefly in her LNG plant refinements and her painted hull, and she closed the Meraviglia family as MSC's building programme moved on to the larger World class.

Fate and where she is now

MSC Euribia is in active service with MSC Cruises, one of the fleet's flagships and its environmental standard-bearer.
