Overview
Norwegian Prima is the lead ship of Norwegian Cruise Line's Prima class, delivered by Fincantieri in July 2022. The class — developed under the project name Leonardo — was Norwegian's first new design in a decade and its first to be built in Italy: every Norwegian newbuild from the Jewel class through the Breakaway Plus class had come from Meyer Werft in Germany. Prima deliberately reversed the industry's size race. At 143,535 GT she is smaller than the Breakaway Plus ships that preceded her, and she carries substantially fewer passengers on a comparable footprint, giving her the highest space ratio of any large ship in the fleet at her launch.
She was also launched with a ceremony of firsts: delivered at Marghera on 29 July 2022 and christened at Reykjavík on 27 August 2022 by the singer Katy Perry, she was the first major cruise ship ever christened in Iceland. The Prima class has since grown into the backbone of Norwegian's future fleet, with enlarged Prima Plus successors following the pattern she set.
Key specifications
The dataset records Norwegian Prima at 143,535 GT, 299.0 m long and 44.0 m in beam, with no capacity, crew or speed figure in the frozen row. Published figures differ modestly between sources: Norwegian's own delivery material describes a ship of 965 feet (about 294 m) with double-occupancy capacity variously stated as about 3,100 to 3,215 guests, and a crew of around 1,500 in some specifications. The variation is characteristic of a new class's early published data, where design, as-built and marketing figures circulate simultaneously. What is not in dispute is the design intent those numbers express: a ship of roughly 143,000 GT carrying around 3,100 passengers double occupancy, where her predecessors carried about 4,000 on 168,000 GT — a markedly more spacious ship per guest.
Design and construction
The Prima class was ordered from Fincantieri as a series of six ships, each reported to cost about US$850 million, under the project name Leonardo. Norwegian Prima was built at the builder's Marghera yard, near Venice, as hull 6298. She was floated out in 2021 — the dataset's "launched 2022" is her year of delivery and entry into service — and delivered on 29 July 2022 at a ceremony in Marghera attended by the heads of Norwegian Cruise Line, its parent company and Fincantieri. Delivery had been slightly delayed by the supply-chain difficulties of the period, and the ship's originally planned inaugural programme was rearranged, with an early inaugural sailing cancelled before the rearranged debut went ahead.
The design, by Fincantieri with interiors planned around outdoor space, is organised around Ocean Boulevard: a wraparound promenade, wider and closer to the water than the Breakaway class's Waterfront, that circles the ship with outdoor dining, seating nooks, glass-floored walkways and two infinity pools at the stern flanking the wake. The Haven, Norwegian's suite enclave, was moved entirely to the stern, with its own infinity pool and outdoor areas — a relocation the line presented as giving its most expensive accommodation the ship's best position rather than its customary forward one.
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
Prima — Italian for "first" — names both the ship and the proposition: first of a new class, first Fincantieri ship for the line, and first of a more upscale direction for the brand. Her christening, on 27 August 2022 at Reykjavík, was arranged as an event in its own right: more than 2,500 guests attended, the godmother Katy Perry named the ship and performed, and the ceremony made her the first major cruise ship christened in Iceland. From Reykjavík she sailed an eight-day inaugural voyage to Amsterdam, and her first commercial voyage followed on 3 September 2022, from Amsterdam to Copenhagen. The dataset dates her maiden voyage simply to 2022.
Career by operator
Norwegian Prima has operated for Norwegian Cruise Line throughout her short career, under her original name, within Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.
| Period | Name | Operator |
|---|---|---|
| 2022–present | Norwegian Prima | Norwegian Cruise Line |
Her first year in service was completed in August 2023, by which point she had operated on both sides of the Atlantic in the pattern set at her launch — northern European summers and North American winters in her debut seasons. She was followed into service by her sister Norwegian Viva in August 2023, and the class lead she established passed, in enlarged form, to the Prima Plus ships from 2025.
Onboard character
The features by which Norwegian Prima will be remembered are architectural. Ocean Boulevard turns the entire circumference of one deck into outdoor public space, with the Infinity Beach pools at the stern as its focal point. The Penrose Atrium, a three-deck, angular, light-filled atrium, replaced the conventional central atrium arrangement of earlier Norwegian ships. Indulge Food Hall introduced the line's first food-hall dining concept, a market of small venues with table service ordered by tablet, in place of a conventional single buffet. The Prima Theatre was designed to convert from a tiered show lounge into a nightclub by removing seating, collapsing two functions into one volume.
The activity signatures are equally of their moment: the Prima Speedway, the first three-level go-kart racetrack at sea, wrapping the funnel casing across three decks; and The Drop, a free-fall dry slide descending ten decks, presented at launch as the fastest dry slide at sea. What distinguishes the ensemble is not any single attraction — most had precedents — but the space budget: the same attractions carried on noticeably fewer passengers than the Breakaway Plus ships, which is the ship's whole design argument.
Major refits and incidents
Norwegian Prima is too new to have undergone a refit, and none is recorded in the sources used for this guide. No major incident involving the ship was identified in those sources; the one operational disruption of her early career was commercial rather than navigational — the cancellation and rearrangement of her original inaugural programme in 2022 because of supply-chain delays affecting her completion, after which she was delivered on 29 July 2022 and entered service on the revised schedule described above. Any future refit history will be added as it is documented; nothing is asserted here beyond what the delivery and first-year reporting establishes.
Sister ships and class
The Prima class, as originally ordered, comprises six Fincantieri ships. Norwegian Prima (2022) was followed by Norwegian Viva (2023) to essentially the same design. The series then grows: Norwegian Aqua (2025) and Norwegian Luna (2026) form the Prima Plus subclass at about ten per cent greater tonnage, and the final pair, Norwegian Aura and Norwegian Bella, are planned as a still larger Prima Plus Plus subclass, about twenty per cent larger than Prima, for delivery in 2027 and 2028, which would make them the largest ships in Norwegian's fleet. The class succeeded the Breakaway and Breakaway Plus classes as the line's standard platform, and it is the first Norwegian class built in Italy.
Fate and where she is now
Norwegian Prima is in active service with Norwegian Cruise Line, as recorded in the dataset, under her original name. No sale, transfer or change of role has been announced in the sources used for this guide. As the lead ship of the class on which Norwegian's fleet renewal is based — and the ship whose name the class, and its enlarged subclasses, all carry — her position in the fleet is foundational rather than transitional.
