Overview

Explora I is the first ship of Explora Journeys, the luxury ocean-travel brand created by the MSC Group, and the hull that marked the group's entry into the luxury cruise sector. Delivered by Fincantieri at Monfalcone in July 2023, she is a mid-sized, all-suite ship of 63,621 GT carrying 922 guests in double occupancy — a deliberately low guest count for her tonnage, giving her one of the highest space ratios of any ship launched in her decade. She matters less for any single record than for what she represents: a container-shipping and mass-market cruise giant building a separate, small-ship luxury fleet from a clean sheet of paper, with Italian construction and design throughout.

Key specifications

The dataset figures are: 63,621 GT; 248 m long with a beam of 32.6 m; 922 guests at double occupancy served by a crew of 640; and a service speed of 18.0 knots. The brand describes the accommodation as 461 oceanfront suites, penthouses and residences — the arithmetic of 461 suites at double occupancy is what produces the 922-guest figure, and it explains the ship's character: there are no inside cabins and no high-density decks. Fincantieri's own datasheet, cited in the dataset build, is the source for the tonnage, dimensions and speed; the IMO number, 9869875, was confirmed from a vessel registry record. No refit has yet changed her as-built figures.

Design and construction

Explora I was ordered as the first of an initial four-ship programme announced in 2018, worth more than €2 billion in total, with each ship costing over €500 million. The first steel was cut on 10 June 2021 at the Centro Servizi Navali facility at San Giorgio di Nogaro, which prepares steel for Fincantieri's north-eastern Italian yards, and the hull was assembled at Monfalcone as yard number 6319. Environmental technology was written into the design from the start: selective catalytic reduction to cut nitrogen-oxide emissions, shore-power connectivity, underwater noise management to protect marine life, and a suite of energy-efficiency equipment. Later ships in the programme were planned around LNG and, for the final pair, hydrogen fuel-cell hotel power in port — Explora I herself is the conventionally fuelled first iteration of that evolving platform.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

The ship was floated out at Monfalcone on 30 May 2022, the first time the hull touched water, in a ceremony attended by MSC Group and Fincantieri leadership. She was delivered on 20 July 2023, and her maiden voyage departed on 1 August 2023 — a seven-night sailing from Copenhagen to Reykjavik, calling at Lerwick in Shetland and Kirkwall in Orkney on the way. Her formal naming ceremony was held later, in New York in October 2023, with oceanographer Dr Sylvia Earle — founder of Mission Blue — as godmother, a choice that tied the new brand's public identity to ocean conservation.

Career by operator

Explora I has had a single operator and a single name throughout her short career.

Period Name Operator
2023–present Explora I Explora Journeys

Her early service followed the pattern set out at her launch: a first season in Northern Europe, an Atlantic crossing to North America in the autumn of 2023, and a winter in the Caribbean. Those are deployment facts of her first year only; this guide does not track her itineraries, which change season by season.

Onboard character

The era-defining point of Explora I is the rejection of the ever-larger mainstream ship in favour of space. Her 461 suites all face the sea, and the public-room count is high for 922 guests: at launch she offered six restaurants, twelve indoor and outdoor bars and lounges, four swimming pools and roughly 1,000 square metres of wellness and fitness space. The design language is residential rather than theatrical — the brand's stated aim was a "home at sea" feel, with generous outdoor deck space and private cabanas. Whether that formula defines the 2020s luxury segment will be judged by the fleet that follows her, but Explora I is the ship that set the template.

Major refits and incidents

No major refit has been reported for Explora I, which is expected for a ship in service only since 2023, and no significant incident involving the ship had been reported in the sources used for this guide at the time of writing.

Sister ships and class

Explora I is the lead ship of the Explora Journeys fleet programme built by Fincantieri. Explora II followed from the Sestri Ponente yard in 2024, and the programme was extended to six ships, with later units planned around LNG propulsion and hydrogen fuel-cell technology for hotel loads in port. The dataset does not assign Explora I a formal class name, so she is best described as the first of the Explora series rather than of a named class.

Fate and where she is now

Explora I is in active service with Explora Journeys (status as recorded in the dataset). As the first ship of a fleet still being delivered, she is the reference point against which her sisters are measured, and no change of name, operator or status has been announced in the sources used here.
