Overview

Seven Seas Splendor is the second Explorer-class ship for Regent Seven Seas Cruises, delivered by Fincantieri at Ancona on 30 January 2020 in the operator's delivery announcement and entering service on 6 February 2020 with an inaugural voyage from Barcelona to Miami. Regent sold her, in its phrase, as "the ship that perfects luxury" — the refinement of 2016's Seven Seas Explorer, then billed as the most luxurious ship ever built.

She carries 746 guests in 375 suites, all with balconies in Regent's descriptions, served by 542 crew on the dataset figures. Her arrival made Regent a five-ship fleet and set the template that Seven Seas Grandeur completed in 2023.

She also has a footnote in maritime social history: her master at delivery, Serena Melani, was widely reported as the first woman to captain a brand-new ocean cruise ship from its launch — a first noted in Regent's own delivery coverage.

Key specifications

Dataset: 55,498 GT, 224 m by 31 m, 746 guests double and 829 maximum, 542 crew, 19.5 knots, Fincantieri Ancona. Other sources scatter around these figures more than usual for a modern ship: Regent's delivery release describes 55,254 gross tons, 735 ft length, 551 crew and 750 guests, while CruiseMapper lists 55,498 GT and the class's length at 223 m, and Regent fleet tables have quoted 56,182 GT for this ship. These are measurement, rounding and counting variants across registries and marketing documents, not different ships. The dataset set is used in the spec box; the spread is logged in the batch notes as a variant family, with 55,498 GT the most commonly repeated registry figure after the dataset itself.

What does not vary is the formula: about 375 suites ranging, in Regent's delivery account, from 307 to 4,443 square feet — the largest being the Regent Suite — on a hull of Explorer-class dimensions shared with her sisters.

Design and construction

Built at Ancona, where the class settled after Explorer was built at Sestri Ponente. Construction cost was reported by CruiseMapper at about €430 million. She was ordered as the second of what became a three-ship class, refining Explorer's general arrangement rather than redesigning it: the same all-suite, all-balcony accommodation logic, the same restaurant set, and an even more emphatic material palette — Regent's delivery release quantified it as a $5 million curated art collection, more than 500 crystal chandeliers and over an acre of Italian marble.

Public-space design, as with her sisters, centres on a grand atrium, the Constellation Theater, a two-level spa offer under Regent's Serene Spa & Wellness branding (developed from the line's earlier Canyon Ranch association), a culinary arts kitchen for classes, and observation and horizon lounges sized for a 746-guest ship that never has to seat them all at once. Suites feature the line's Elite Slumber beds, marble bathrooms and walk-in closets in standard descriptions — the residential, hotel-grade specification that is the class's real design signature.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

One name only: Seven Seas Splendor. She was launched (floated out) at Fincantieri's Ancona yard on 9 February 2019, per Regent Seven Seas Cruises' and Fincantieri's float-out release, and the dataset records launched 2019. Delivered at the end of January 2020, she sailed her maiden voyage on 6 February 2020 from Barcelona to Miami, per the dataset and Regent's delivery coverage, and was christened at Miami on 21 February 2020 by model and actress Christie Brinkley, named as godmother in CruiseMapper's ship record and Regent's delivery-period reporting.

Within weeks of that christening, the global cruise shutdown of March 2020 intervened — like her near-contemporary Scarlet Lady, she began her career and immediately paused it, a shared biography of the 2020 newbuild generation.

Career by operator

Period Name Operator
2020–present Seven Seas Splendor Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Single name, single operator. Her career within the fleet is as the middle Explorer-class sister: neither the class pioneer nor the final refinement, but the ship that confirmed the class as Regent's standard product. Regent noted at her opening for reservations that the first booking day was the busiest in company history to that point — a contemporary claim recorded here as operator history, not as an audited record.

Onboard character

Character is the Explorer-class luxury formula at its most polished: five restaurants in Regent's delivery count plus lounges and bars, all-suite accommodation, an art-and-marble interior register, and service built around a crew-to-guest ratio of roughly 1:1.38 on the dataset figures. Dining — Compass Rose, Prime 7, Pacific Rim and Chartreuse among the established venues — is presented as the ship's entertainment centre of gravity, alongside the theatre and the spa, rather than around deck attractions, of which the class has deliberately few beyond pool, sports deck and putting green in fleet descriptions.

Major refits and incidents

No major refit or casualty is recorded in the sources used. Her early career was interrupted by the industry-wide 2020–2021 pandemic suspension, an operator-level event rather than a ship incident. A future refurbishment year appears in one secondary listing as 2027 — a planned or erroneous entry that this guide does not treat as fact.

Sister ships and class

Explorer class in substance (the dataset's class field is blank for this row, while her sister Seven Seas Grandeur's row names it): Seven Seas Explorer (2016) before her and Seven Seas Grandeur (2023) after her, all Fincantieri ships of about 55,000–56,000 GT and 746 guests. The wider fleet adds the smaller Navigator, Mariner and Voyager.

Fate and where she is now

Active with Regent Seven Seas Cruises, per the dataset. A young ultra-luxury ship in a consolidated fleet under Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings; no sale, charter or renaming is recorded. Her expected fate is the class fate: long Regent service, periodic hotel refits, and eventual cascade to a later owner only when the Prestige generation reshapes the fleet — speculation this directory does not extend beyond noting that no such move is announced in the sources used.
