Overview
Europa 2 is a luxury cruise ship for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, built by STX Europe at Saint-Nazaire, France, and entered service in May 2013. At 42,830 GT for just 516 passengers, she was promoted at launch as the most spacious cruise ship afloat — the highest ratio of gross tonnage to passengers in the industry — and she has been a fixture at the top of the major cruise guides' ratings ever since, holding the Berlitz / Insight Guides "five stars plus" assessment that few ships have ever received.
She is not a sister or a rebuild of the line's earlier Europa (1999), but a deliberate second flagship: where Europa embodied formal, traditional luxury, Europa 2 was designed as its casual, lifestyle-oriented counterpart — all-suite, all-balcony, bilingual in German and English, and aimed at a younger luxury passenger than the original ship courted. The dataset gives no crew figure for her; published sources put her complement at more than 370, a ratio of roughly one crew member to every 1.4 passengers that is itself part of the ship's proposition.
Key specifications
The dataset records Europa 2 at 42,830 GT, 225.62 metres long and 26.7 metres in beam, with a capacity of 516 passengers and a speed of 21.0 knots. Her draught is 6.3 metres and she has seven passenger decks. Those figures are stable across her published histories and have not changed in service.
The arithmetic is the story. Divide 42,830 GT by 516 passengers and the space ratio is about 83 tons per passenger — against figures in the low thirties typical of large contemporary ships. Hapag-Lloyd designed to that number deliberately, specifying 251 suites, every one with a veranda, on a hull the size of a mainstream ship carrying four times the guests. Her propulsion is diesel-electric, four MaK 6M43C engines totalling 24 MW driving podded propulsors, for the 21-knot speed in the table.
Design and construction
Europa 2 was ordered as a chartered newbuild: construction began at STX France, Saint-Nazaire, with first steel cut on 5 September 2011, for a third-party owning company from which Hapag-Lloyd Cruises would charter her for twelve years from delivery. The keel was laid in early 2012 — sources give both 7 February and 1 March 2012 for the keel-laying milestone, a minor variant in the secondary record — and she was launched on 6 July 2012, only about four months later, the short building-dock phase typical of modern block construction. Fitting out took longer than the hull phase, as it usually does on a luxury ship.
She was handed over in late April 2013, the takeover protocol signed on 29 April by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises' managing director Wolfgang Flägel and STX France's Laurent Castaing (some secondary sources date formal delivery 26 or 30 April; the protocol date is used here). The design brief, stated by the line before delivery, was explicit: exceed the incoming SOLAS 2010 safe-return-to-port requirements, build to pod propulsion, and make the ship the informal alternative to Europa — no captain's dinner formality, contemporary interiors, and facilities such as golf simulators and a large spa that belonged to a resort rather than to liner tradition.
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
The name Europa 2 states the concept plainly: a second Europa, not a replacement. She was launched at Saint-Nazaire on 6 July 2012 and christened on 10 May 2013 at Hamburg, during the celebrations of the 824th anniversary of the Port of Hamburg — a home-port ceremony for a Hamburg line, in front of the city the company is identified with.
Her maiden voyage began the next day, 11 May 2013 — the date in the dataset — sailing from Hamburg to Lisbon. The pairing of the christening with the port anniversary and a maiden voyage starting at home was deliberate staging: the ship was presented first to her own market, in her own port, before beginning her international career.
Career by operator
| Period | Name | Operator |
|---|---|---|
| 2013–present | Europa 2 | Hapag-Lloyd Cruises |
One name, one operator, no interruption. Europa 2 has sailed for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises continuously since May 2013, latterly as part of the TUI group's cruise activities alongside the original Europa and the line's expedition ships.
Onboard character
Europa 2's era-defining trait is a refusal, unusual in luxury cruising, of luxury's own rituals. At her introduction Hapag-Lloyd briefed journalists not to call her a luxury ship at all: the style was to be informal and lifestyle-led, with the formal captain's dinner and similar traditions dropped, and service conducted bilingually so the ship could sell beyond the German market for the first time in the line's modern history. The space ratio did the rest of the positioning — eight restaurants and six bars for 516 people, a 15-metre pool under a retractable cover, and suites that begin, rather than end, at a size mainstream ships reserve for their top categories.
A decade on, that combination — maximum space, minimum ceremony — reads as the template the wider luxury sector drifted toward. Europa 2 is the ship that demonstrated a top-rated luxury product could be built on informality, and her ratings record since 2013 is the evidence the industry cites.
Major refits and incidents
No grounding, fire, collision or other major incident involving Europa 2 is recorded in the sources consulted. Her yard history is a programme of planned modernisation. Her second docking after launch took place at Blohm+Voss, Hamburg, in September 2017 (13–27 September), when the Herrenzimmer gin bar was redesigned and renamed Collins, the Jazz Club became Club 2, the Belvedere lounge at the bow was rebuilt with a coffee bar and library access, and technical upgrades were carried out alongside the hotel work. A further major modernisation has been announced for a January 2027 drydock in Singapore, covering new colour schemes for around 250 suites and work to the atrium, piano bar and speciality restaurants; as a future plan rather than a completed event, it is noted here but not treated as part of her completed refit record.
Sister ships and class
Europa 2 has no sister ship, and the dataset leaves her class field blank. She is a one-off design. The original Europa (1999) is her fleetmate and conceptual parent — the ship she was built to complement — but the two are different designs from different yards, a generation apart, and are not sisters in any technical sense. Within the Hapag-Lloyd fleet she otherwise keeps company with the line's expedition newbuilds of the Hanseatic series, which share her operator and nothing else.
Fate and where she is now
Europa 2 is active and in service with Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. She has never been sold, renamed or withdrawn, and at more than a decade into service she remains, by the standard published ratings, one of the highest-rated cruise ships in the world. No fate beyond continued service is recorded.
