Cunard was founded in 1840 by Samuel Cunard, who won a British government contract to carry the Royal Mail across the Atlantic by steamship. The service that began that year from Liverpool made Cunard a defining name of the ocean-liner era, operator of Lusitania, Mauretania, Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth 2, and the line still trades deliberately on that heritage of formal, traditional ocean travel. The four ships in this directory are all named for queens. The flagship is Queen Mary 2, at 148,528 GT a purpose-built ocean liner rather than a conventional cruise ship, and the largest vessel listed here. With her are the Vista-class Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth, each about 90,000 GT, and the newest ship, Queen Anne at 114,188 GT, which continued the four-Queens fleet into a new generation.
