Marella Cruises

Marella Cruises is the British cruise line operated by TUI, and began life as Thomson Cruises. Thomson first entered cruising in 1973, withdrew in 1976 as fuel costs rose, and returned in 1995, building a popular British fly-cruise business under the Thomson name. In late 2017 the line was rebranded as Marella — a name said to mean 'shining sea' in Celtic — to distinguish it from TUI's German joint-venture line. Unusually, Marella has built its fleet entirely from ships first built for other operators, extensively refurbished for the British market. The five ships in this directory, all launched in the mid-1990s and ranging from 69,472 GT to 77,302 GT, illustrate that approach: Marella Discovery and Marella Discovery 2 began as Royal Caribbean Vision-class ships, while Marella Explorer, Marella Explorer 2 and Marella Voyager are former Century-class ships.
