Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises began in 1984 as Windstar Sail Cruises, founded to do something then new: carry guests on purpose-built motor-sailing yachts whose sails were controlled by computer, combining the romance of sail with the reliability of engines. That idea still defines half the fleet in this directory. Wind Star and Wind Spirit, each 5,307 GT, and the larger Wind Surf at 14,745 GT are true sailing ships, with tall masts and a yacht-like scale that lets them use small harbours and anchorages. The other three ships — Star Breeze, Star Pride and Star Legend, each about 13,000 GT — are motor yachts, originally built as small luxury cruise ships and later lengthened. Together the six ships, none larger than 14,745 GT, make Windstar one of the smallest-ship fleets listed here.
