Overview

Brilliant Lady is the fourth and last of Virgin Voyages' original Lady-class ships, built by Fincantieri at Sestri Ponente, Genoa, as hull 6289. She is a 108,232 GT, adults-only ship for 2,770 guests, and she completes the fleet Virgin announced in 2015–2016 when it set out to build a cruise line that deliberately did not look like one. Her story is defined by two things: a long gap between her float-out in November 2022 and her entry into service in September 2025, as delivery was pushed back by supply-chain and staffing problems; and a set of design alterations that made her the first Virgin ship able to transit the Panama Canal — and therefore the first able to work the North American west coast and Alaska for the line.

Key specifications

The dataset records 108,232 GT — the class's registered figure, shared with her sisters; Virgin's own marketing commonly rounds the class to 110,000 GT — with a length of 277.2 m, a beam of 38 m, 2,770 guests at double occupancy and a crew of 1,160. She has 1,408 cabins and suites. The figures that distinguish her from her sisters are not in the headline table: her hull and superstructure were reworked within the canal's dimensional limits so that she, alone among the four Lady ships, is Panama Canal compliant. The dataset leaves her speed blank and none is stated here.

Design and construction

Brilliant Lady was ordered in October 2018 as the fourth ship of the programme that began with a 2015 letter of intent for three ships. The class design was Fincantieri's, built around Virgin's "young at heart" brief: a stern treatment that turns the red Virgin logo into a billboard visible for miles, a mermaid figurehead artwork individual to each ship — Brilliant Lady's mermaid, by illustrator Janice Sung, draws on Renaissance painting and Japanese and Chinese art — and energy-recovery systems using engine waste heat, with LED lighting throughout. Her float-out ceremony took place on 25 November 2022 at Sestri Ponente, with final outfitting completed at Palermo. Completion then slipped well beyond the originally planned 2023 debut, and she was not delivered until 2025. The canal-compliance alterations also give her a visibly more compact, squared profile than her sisters — a functional change, made for the itineraries she was built to open up, that happens to be her easiest recognition point.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

The dataset records her launch as 2022 — the year of her float-out — and her maiden voyage as 5 September 2025. That maiden voyage, marketed by Virgin as her "MerMaiden" sailing, was a five-night round trip from New York to Bermuda. An inaugural sailing from Miami followed on 17 October 2025. No christening ceremony or godmother is recorded in the sources used for this guide.

Career by operator

Brilliant Lady has had a single name and operator.

Period Name Operator

Her debut deployment was North American by design — New York, then Miami, then the Panama Canal transit her hull was altered to permit, opening Los Angeles and Seattle (for Alaska) to the line for the first time. Those first-season facts are part of her permanent record because they explain her design; this guide does not track her later scheduling.

Onboard character

The Lady class's era-defining character is its refusal of cruise-ship conventions: no main dining room, no buffet in the traditional sense, no dress codes, tattoo parlour and record shop among the early class signatures, and an adults-only policy across the fleet. Brilliant Lady carries that template with her own variations — at her debut the line highlighted a Spanish-American reinterpretation of the class's Razzle Dazzle restaurant, as Rojo by Razzle Dazzle, and a programme of new original productions. Venue line-ups evolve and are not tracked here; what is permanent is the design proposition she shares with her sisters and the canal-capable hull that sets her apart from them.

Major refits and incidents

Brilliant Lady has had no refit — she entered service in 2025 — and no significant incident involving her had been reported in the sources used for this guide at the time of writing. Her delayed delivery was a shipyard-programme matter, recorded under construction above.

Sister ships and class

The Lady class comprises four ships, all built by Fincantieri at Sestri Ponente: Scarlet Lady (the 2020 lead ship), Valiant Lady (2022), Resilient Lady (2023) and Brilliant Lady (2025). The four share the registered tonnage and guest capacity in the dataset; Brilliant Lady is the only canal-compliant member of the class.

Fate and where she is now

Brilliant Lady is in active service with Virgin Voyages (status as recorded in the dataset), the newest ship of the line's original four-ship programme.
