Overview

Carnival Vista is the lead ship of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, delivered by Fincantieri in 2016 as the largest ship in the fleet. The class's design idea was to turn the ship outward: a wrap-around promenade, outdoor spaces attached to bars and restaurants, the first IMAX theatre at sea — and, its emblem, the SkyRide, a pedal-powered aerial ride suspended on a track above the top deck, which won "best cruise ship feature" awards for four consecutive years. The ship's engineering record is equally distinctive: in 2019 her Azipod repair was carried out by loading the entire 133,500 GT vessel onto the heavy-lift ship BOKA Vanguard as a floating dry dock, a first-of-its-kind operation.

Key specifications

The dataset records 133,500 GT, a length of 322.0 m, a beam of 37.1 m and a capacity of 3,934. Lloyd's Register data quoted in her reference article gives 133,596 GT and an overall length of 323.63 m — the dataset figures are the class programme numbers. The same sources give 3,934 passengers at double occupancy, 4,977 maximum, and a crew of about 1,450. Two cautions attach to the dataset row. First, its speed field, 18.0 knots, matches the service-speed figure in her Carnival fact sheet as reproduced in her article, but it is well below the maximum speeds quoted for the class elsewhere and should be read as a service figure only. Second, its class field reads "Vista (2002)-class cruise ship" — a label belonging to Holland America Line's unrelated Vista class of 2002; Carnival Vista heads Carnival's own Vista class of 2016 [see batch notes]. She has fifteen decks, a draught of about 8.55 m, and MAN diesel generating sets driving two ABB Azipod XO units — the first Azipods on a Carnival ship since Carnival Miracle in 2004.

Design and construction

The ship was ordered in 2012 and built by Fincantieri at Monfalcone, Italy, as hull 6242, at a reported cost of about US$780 million. Steel was cut in late February 2014, the keel laid on 14 October 2014, and the coin ceremony and float-out took place in June 2015 (her article gives the launch date as 25 June 2015). She was delivered on 28 April 2016 after sea trials that March. By tonnage she was the largest Carnival Cruise Line ship on delivery — a position she held only until her sister Carnival Horizon arrived in 2018. The design developed the Dream class's outward turn: the Lanai promenade concept expanded, indoor-outdoor venues placed at the ship's edges, a large SportSquare on top, and family harbour staterooms and lounge at the stern.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

Floated out at Monfalcone in June 2015 and delivered on 28 April 2016, the ship began her maiden voyage on 1 May 2016 from Trieste — a thirteen-day Mediterranean cruise ending at Barcelona, the date the dataset records. Her formal christening came later in 2016 in New York, where her godmother was Deshauna Barber, Miss USA 2016 and a United States Army officer — Carnival choosing, as it had with Carnival Magic's St. Jude godmother, a naming figure from outside show business.

Career by operator

Period Name Operator
2016–present Carnival Vista Carnival Cruise Line

One operator, one name. Her career pattern is documented in her reference article: an inaugural Mediterranean season from May to October 2016, then New York, then year-round Miami service from November 2016, a move to Galveston in September 2018, and a further homeport transfer to Port Canaveral in November 2023 as Carnival Jubilee took the Galveston role. Those moves are recorded as career history, not as a statement of present deployment. In 2024 she received Carnival's current blue-hull livery in dry dock, with refreshed retail, casino and bar spaces reported at the same refit.

Onboard character

The SkyRide defines the ship: two riders at a time pedal recumbent vehicles around an elevated, roughly 240-metre twin track slung above SportSquare, some 45 metres above the sea — part ride, part exercise machine, and the Vista class's most imitated talking point. Below it, the design's serious idea is the edge-of-ship public space: the Havana area with its outdoor patio, the Lanai promenade, and bars and restaurants with genuine outdoor seating — the ship as a series of verandas rather than a sealed box. The first IMAX theatre at sea and a large WaterWorks park with a Kaleid-O-Slide raft slide complete a specification aimed squarely at the family market of the mid-2010s.

Major refits and incidents

The outstanding engineering episode of her career began in June 2019, when performance problems in her Azipod propulsion system forced Carnival to cancel three cruises. With Grand Bahama Shipyard's available dry dock compromised by that spring's crane collapse onto Oasis of the Seas, Boskalis's semi-submersible heavy-lift ship BOKA Vanguard was used as a floating dry dock: Carnival Vista was floated onto the submerged deck and lifted clear of the water for the Azipod repair — the first time a cruise ship had been dry-docked this way. In July 2019 she also temporarily lost power under way in the Gulf of Mexico, and propulsion issues were reported again in August 2024, requiring a short removal from service.

Earlier, on 28 August 2016, her wake while manoeuvring near Messina, Italy, caused extensive damage to the tourist harbour of Marina del Nettuno — an incident captured on video and widely reported as a "mini-tsunami". In November 2019 two of her passengers were killed and five injured in a road crash during an independently booked bus tour in Belize — an excursion accident, not a shipboard one. No fire or grounding is recorded for the hull.

Sister ships and class

Carnival's Vista class comprises Carnival Vista (2016), Carnival Horizon (2018) and Carnival Panorama (2019), with two further hulls of the design built for Costa Cruises as Costa Venezia (2019) and Costa Firenze (2020) — both of which later transferred to Carnival Cruise Line itself under the "Carnival Fun Italian Style" concept, reuniting all five hulls under one operator. The class was succeeded in Carnival's building programme by the LNG-powered Excel class.

Fate and where she is now

The dataset lists the hull as active and operating for Carnival Cruise Line as Carnival Vista, her only name, and the namesake of her class. She is a Phase 1 (active fleet) page in this directory. Her record to date — a record-size debut, an award-winning signature ride, and the most inventive dry-docking in cruise history — makes her one of the defining Carnival hulls of her decade.
