Overview
Celebrity Ascent is the fourth Edge-class cruise ship for Celebrity Cruises, built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire, France, and entered service in late 2023. She is one of the enlarged second-generation Edge ships: at 141,420 GT and 326.5 metres she shares the stretched platform of Celebrity Beyond rather than the smaller original dimensions of Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex. She carries 3,260 guests at double occupancy, up to 3,937 at maximum capacity, with a crew of 1,416 and a speed of 22.6 knots recorded in the dataset.
The Edge class is Celebrity's design statement of the late 2010s and 2020s — a ship turned outward to the sea, with a moving cantilevered platform, the Magic Carpet, on her starboard side, staterooms with opening glass walls in place of conventional balconies, and a resort deck organised around a single large pool. Ascent is the refinement of that formula rather than a departure from it: the same architecture, adjusted in detail on the evidence of three earlier sisters.
Key specifications
The dataset gives Celebrity Ascent as 141,420 GT, 326.5 metres in length and 39.5 metres in beam, with capacity for 3,260 passengers at double occupancy and 3,937 at maximum, a crew of 1,416 and a speed of 22.6 knots. Her IMO number is 9838400 and her Saint-Nazaire yard number is M34, continuing the yard's alphanumeric sequence for the class — J34 for Edge, K34 for Apex, L34 for Beyond. She is registered in Malta, with Valletta as her port of registry, according to her Wikipedia infobox.
Design and construction
The Edge platform was designed around a distinctive profile: a near-vertical, outward-raked bow form, terraced resort decks aft, and the Magic Carpet, a tennis-court-sized platform cantilevered off the starboard side that moves between decks and serves different functions at each level — a tender boarding station at the waterline, an open-air restaurant extension higher up. Inside, the defining stateroom idea is the Infinite Veranda, in which the room's outer wall is a folding glass partition and a drop-down window, merging balcony and cabin into one space.
Beyond lengthened the design by about 20 metres and added a deck compared with Edge and Apex, and Ascent follows that enlarged template, with the expanded Retreat suite complex and the redesigned, multi-level Sunset Bar aft that Beyond introduced. Construction at Saint-Nazaire began with her keel laying on 17 November 2021, and her float-out was completed on 24 January 2023, according to the Edge-class overview — part of her machinery, the floating engine-room unit, was built at the CRIST yard in Gdynia, Poland, a standard practice for the Saint-Nazaire yard's large cruise ships. She entered service on 22 November 2023 with preview sailings ahead of her official maiden voyage.
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
Celebrity's recent ship names are drawn from the language of the line's own brand slogans, and Ascent — like Edge, Apex and Beyond — is a single aspirational word rather than a place, person or historical reference. She was launched at Saint-Nazaire in 2023, the dataset's launch year.
She was christened on 1 December 2023 by two godmothers, Captain Sandy Yawn and her sister Michelle Dunham, an unusual joint appointment recorded in her Wikipedia infobox. Her maiden voyage followed on 3 December 2023, the date given in the dataset, days after she had first entered service with preview cruises on 22 November 2023.
Career by operator
Celebrity Ascent has known one name and one operator. Her career to date is the ordinary early life of a new flagship-class ship: delivery from Saint-Nazaire in November 2023, an inaugural season following her December christening, and continued service in the Celebrity fleet. No transfer, charter away from the line or renaming is recorded in the sources consulted, and seasonal deployment is deliberately not described here, as it changes from year to year.

Onboard character
The Edge class's character is architectural. The Magic Carpet gives the ship a moving part visible from any photograph of her starboard side; the Grand Plaza, a multi-deck atrium space at her centre, replaces the conventional cruise-ship lobby; and the Rooftop Garden on the top deck — a landscaped space with floating pools cantilevered out over the ship's side on the enlarged ships — treats outdoor planting as a primary public room rather than decoration.
Ascent was presented on her debut as the polished fourth iteration: review coverage at launch noted a remodelled Sunset Bar, the Rooftop Garden plunge pools, a refreshed Grand Plaza and an annex space for private events, sport viewing and karaoke, alongside the class signatures of Eden, the multi-level venue aft, and the Le Voyage specialty restaurant by Daniel Boulud that Beyond had introduced to the class. The emphasis throughout the design is hotel-like — Celebrity markets the ships as "relaxed luxury" resorts — with a grown-up atmosphere rather than the water-park profile of the largest contemporary ships. Venue rosters change with refits and are not catalogued here.
Major refits and incidents
None recorded in the sources consulted. Celebrity Ascent entered service in 2023, has had no major refit, and no major incident involving her appears in the sources used for this guide.
Sister ships and class
The Edge class, all built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire for Celebrity Cruises, comprises Celebrity Edge (2018), Celebrity Apex (2021), Celebrity Beyond (2022), Celebrity Ascent (2023) and Celebrity Xcel (2025), with a further ship, Celebrity Xcite, under construction for later delivery according to the class overview. The class divides into two sizes: Edge and Apex at about 130,818 GT, and the lengthened Beyond, Ascent and their successors at about 141,420 GT. Ascent's nearest sister is Beyond, whose enlarged layout she repeats most closely.
Fate and where she is now
Celebrity Ascent is active and operating for Celebrity Cruises, as recorded in the dataset. She is at the beginning of her career; no sale, transfer or withdrawal has been announced in the sources consulted.
