Built by Aker Finnyards at the Perno shipyard in Turku, Finland, between 2006 and 2008, Royal Caribbean's three Freedom-class ships measure between 154,407 and 156,271 GT. The design stretched the proven Voyager-class platform — same Royal Promenade, ice rink and climbing wall — by one more increment of size, and when Freedom of the Seas debuted in 2006 she was the largest cruise ship in the world. Her defining addition sat on the top deck: the FlowRider, the first surfing simulator at sea, which let passengers ride a standing wave while the ship itself was under way. Briefly the biggest class afloat, the Freedoms were overtaken only by Royal Caribbean's own Oasis class.
