Built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire, France, between 1999 and 2001, the four Millennium-class ships were Celebrity Cruises' defining newbuilds of the turn of the century, each measuring between 90,940 and 90,963 GT. They were the first cruise ships powered by gas turbines, using a combined gas-and-steam plant chosen for lower emissions, reduced vibration and greater speed than conventional diesel machinery. Inside, the design set the template for modern Celebrity: a high proportion of balcony staterooms, glass-walled exterior lifts, an extensive spa and thermal suite, and a formal specialty restaurant evoking the golden age of ocean liners. Headed by Celebrity Millennium, the class still sails intact for its original operator.
