Overview

Eurodam is a Signature-class cruise ship for Holland America Line, delivered in 2008 as the 80th ship to enter the company's service and the first of its Signature class — an enlarged development of the Vista class that was, at delivery, the largest ship in Holland America's fleet and its first to carry more than 2,000 passengers. Her name continues the line's Dutch-element scheme (Euro- for Europe, -dam the suffix carried by generations of Holland America ships since the nineteenth century). She is also notable for an honour rare in modern cruising: she was christened at Rotterdam on 1 July 2008 by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, a royal naming that underlined how central the ship was to the line's Dutch identity within the Carnival Corporation group.

Key specifications

Dataset figures: IMO 9378448, 86,273 GT, 285.43 m length, 32.25 m beam, maximum capacity 2,104, Fincantieri hull 6149 and 23.9 knots. Her article gives length as 285.0 m, beam 32.2 m, 11 passenger decks, capacity 2,104 passengers and a crew of 929; the small dimensional variants are rounding, not disagreement. Her machinery is thoroughly modern for the Vista lineage: six MaK diesel generators totalling 64 MW feed a diesel-electric plant driving two 17.6 MW ABB Azipods, with three 1.9 MW bow thrusters giving her dynamic-positioning ability — the ability to hold station without anchors, valuable in sensitive anchorages. The dataset's 23.9 kn is her maximum speed; service speed is 22 knots.

Design and construction

Eurodam was built at Fincantieri's Marghera yard near Venice as yard number 6149: laid down on 9 February 2007, launched on 28 September 2007 and completed on 16 June 2008. The dataset's "launched 2008" is thus her completion year; the float-out was in 2007, a discrepancy logged in the batch notes. The Signature design took the Vista-class hull and added a deck and reworked interior arrangements, pushing tonnage from about 82,300 GT to 86,273 GT and capacity past 2,100 while keeping the Panamax-compatible beam that let Holland America keep its global deployment flexibility. Build cost is reported at about US$447 million.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

The name pairs the continent of the line's birth with its traditional suffix. The launch on 28 September 2007 was a float-out at Marghera; the naming was reserved for Rotterdam, where Queen Beatrix christened the ship on 1 July 2008 — a state-occasion christening by a reigning monarch, in the line's home port, that remains the defining ceremony of her career. Her official maiden voyage was a ten-day cruise from Copenhagen beginning 5 July 2008, followed by an inaugural season of European events and Baltic cruising and her first transatlantic crossing in August 2008.

Career by operator

Period Name Operator
2008–present Eurodam Holland America Line

A single-operator career within Carnival Corporation ownership. Her deployment pattern has been the classic Holland America alternation — European and Baltic summers in her early years giving way to Alaska summers from Seattle, with Caribbean winters from Fort Lauderdale and, from late 2018, Mexican Riviera, Hawaii and French Polynesia seasons from San Diego. Individual itineraries are not catalogued here under the directory's evergreen rule; the structural point is the continuity — no rename, no transfer, no flag change (Rotterdam, Netherlands, throughout) in more than seventeen years.

Onboard character

Eurodam was designed as the fullest expression of Holland America's traditionalist premium style: a wraparound teak promenade, a three-deck atrium with Dutch art and reproductions of Dutch masters throughout the ship, and dining as the centrepiece — five dining venues at delivery, headed by the Pinnacle Grill. The Signature additions over the Vista ships were about enrichment rather than spectacle: an extra deck of cabins and public space, an enlarged theatre seating about 890, and partnerships of the period such as the Pinnacle Grill's association with Le Cirque. Her 2015 drydock added the B.B. King's Blues Club — she was the first ship to receive it — and BBC Earth programming in the main theatre followed, music-led enrichment that became a Holland America signature of the decade.

Major refits and incidents

Her record is one of scheduled work rather than casualty. She was drydocked for ten days at Freeport, Bahamas, in April 2011 — her first refit since construction — again for fourteen days in December 2015 at Freeport (the refit that brought the Blues Club), and again at Freeport from 18 February to 4 March 2023, with routine drydockings between. Her one entry in the record books is positive: on 14 January 2017 she earned her 11th consecutive perfect score of 100 in a US Public Health (CDC) inspection at Port Everglades, reported at the time as a cruise-industry record. No major incident, grounding or fire is recorded for the ship in her article.

Sister ships and class

The Signature class has two members: Eurodam (2008) and the slightly larger, newer Nieuw Amsterdam (2010). Both derive from the four-ship Vista class (Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, Noordam) built earlier in the decade, and the wider Vista design family also produced ships for Cunard and Costa. The dataset row leaves the class field blank; her article's Signature-class assignment, with Nieuw Amsterdam as sister, is the documented position and the omission is logged in the batch notes. She was succeeded as Holland America's flagship generation by the larger Pinnacle class from 2016.

Fate and where she is now

In service with Holland America Line, Dutch-flagged, approaching two decades in the fleet — the dataset status "active, operating" stands.
