Overview
Explora III is the third ship for Explora Journeys, the MSC Group's luxury brand, delivered at Fincantieri's Sestri Ponente shipyard in Genoa on 23 July 2026 and entering service with a maiden voyage on 3 August 2026, the date recorded in the dataset. She is the halfway ship in a planned six-ship, €3.5 billion-plus fleet, and the first Explora ship capable of liquefied natural gas propulsion.
She is also a deliberate step in size. At 72,810 GT and 268 m she is about 19–20 m longer and roughly 9,000 GT larger than Explora I and Explora II — yet guest numbers stay capped at the same 922 in 461 ocean-front suites. The extra steel buys space, not berths: larger public areas, expanded wellness and dining, and a second Owner's Residence. In a segment where space ratio is the product, Explora III is the class growing up without growing crowded.
Her delivery, in Explora's own release, was framed as the next phase of the brand's environmental strategy as well as its growth — the LNG capability marking the point where the fleet's later ships diverge technically from the first pair.
Key specifications
Dataset figures: 72,810 GT, 268 m by 32 m, 922 guests at double occupancy, 18 knots, Fincantieri Sestri Ponente, maiden voyage 3 August 2026. Contemporary delivery reporting confirms the tonnage and guest figures and the 23 July 2026 delivery date at Genoa. The dataset gives no crew figure; none is stated here.
The comparison that matters is internal. Same beam and same guest count as her predecessors, greater length and tonnage, and therefore one of the highest space-per-guest ratios in the luxury market — secondary coverage at delivery put the point plainly: a bigger ship that is intended to feel more intimate, not less. Her 461 suites include two Owner's Residences, doubling the class's previous top-category count, the Deck 7 residence designed by Patricia Urquiola according to delivery-period coverage.
Design and construction
Built by Fincantieri at Sestri Ponente, Genoa — the yard for the whole Explora series — she was under construction alongside her sisters in a sequence the yard made public in September 2024, when her coin ceremony was held during Explora II's delivery event. The dataset records "launched: 2026"; in shipbuilding terms her float-out and construction milestones fell in the 2025–2026 build window, and she was completed and delivered in July 2026.
Technically, her defining feature is LNG capability — the first in the fleet — presented by Explora as a pathway to renewable drop-in fuels such as bio-LNG and synthetic LNG, alongside shore-power and efficiency systems developed across the later ships of the programme. Secondary coverage describes her as heading an "Evolution" development of the original design.
Interiors follow the established Explora residential idiom, expanded: new dining concepts reported at delivery include venues named the Shore Club, the Cellar and the Chef's Table in secondary summaries of the delivery release, plus expanded Ocean Penthouses and Residences and a reworked Ocean Wellness area — listed here as design intent at delivery, not as a deck-plan inventory.
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
One name only: Explora III, third in the fleet's Roman-numeral sequence. Delivered on 23 July 2026 at Sestri Ponente in a ceremony attended by MSC Cruise Division executive chairman Pierfrancesco Vago, Explora president Anna Nash and Fincantieri leadership, she entered service on 3 August 2026 per the dataset. Her early deployment included a high-latitude positioning toward North America in autumn 2026 reported in trade coverage — noted here only as early-career context, not as a standing itinerary, in line with this directory's evergreen rule.
No godmother is recorded in the dataset or in the delivery release extracts used for this guide.
Career by operator
| Period | Name | Operator |
|---|---|---|
| 2026–present | Explora III | Explora Journeys |
A single-name, single-operator career, at its very beginning. Her fleet significance is positional: third ship, first LNG-capable ship, and the template for Explora IV, V and VI, which share the LNG direction of travel announced for the later programme.
Onboard character
Her era-defining traits are inherited from the class and then amplified: all-suite, all-ocean-front accommodation; a residential, European luxury-hotel interior language rather than cruise-ship spectacle; multiple included restaurants instead of a single main dining room; extensive open deck, pool and wellness space per guest; and luxury retail maisons presented as boutiques rather than as a mall. Delivery coverage singled out a first-at-sea Chopard boutique alongside returning Cartier and Rolex boutiques.
The second Owner's Residence is the clearest statement of character: at the top of the market the ship sells privacy and square metres — a full-width Deck 8 residence and the Urquiola-designed Deck 7 residence, each with private terrace and butler service in delivery descriptions — rather than attractions.
Major refits and incidents
None. She entered service in August 2026; no refit, casualty or notable incident is recorded in the sources used, and none would be expected for a ship in her first season.
Sister ships and class
Fleet sisters: Explora I (2023) and Explora II (2024), the smaller conventionally fuelled pair; Explora IV (due 2027), Explora V and Explora VI following in the six-ship Fincantieri programme. She is closest in spirit to the ships that follow her — LNG-capable and enlarged — while remaining recognisably the same product as the first pair. The dataset's class field is blank, and no formal class name is used by the operator in the sources consulted.
Fate and where she is now
Active and newly in service with Explora Journeys, per the dataset and the operator's delivery release of 23 July 2026. Her fate, for directory purposes, is the ordinary one of a brand-new flagship-generation ship: a long front-line career ahead, with the fleet's remaining three ships building behind her. No sale, charter or renaming is recorded.
