Overview

Legend of the Seas is the third ship of Royal Caribbean International's Icon class, built by Meyer Turku at the Perno shipyard in Turku, Finland, and entered service in July 2026. At 248,663 gross tons she shares with her sisters Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas the title of largest cruise ship in the world by tonnage. She matters for two reasons beyond her size. She is the first Icon-class ship to debut in Europe, opening the class to the Mediterranean market, and she revives a name Royal Caribbean had never previously reused on a new ship: the original Legend of the Seas was a Vision-class vessel that served the line from 1995 to 2017 and now sails as Marella Discovery 2. Royal Caribbean's chief marketing officer Kara Wallace explained that the name was chosen deliberately, as "an homage to everything that came before it" — a ship meant to sum up fifty years of the company's development in a single hull.

Key specifications

As built, Legend of the Seas measures 248,663 GT and 364.84 metres in length overall, with a beam of 48.49 metres and a draught of 8.8 metres. She has 20 decks in total, 18 of them guest decks, and carries 5,610 passengers at double occupancy across 2,805 cabins, rising to a maximum capacity of about 7,600 passengers, with a crew of 2,350. Her service speed is 22 knots. She is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) through Wärtsilä dual-fuel generating sets, and is Royal Caribbean's fourth LNG-powered ship. Her yard number at Meyer Turku was NB-1402, and her reported cost was €2.33 billion. She is registered at Nassau in the Bahamas.

Design and construction

The Icon class was conceived as a step change rather than an enlargement: a ship organised into distinct "neighbourhoods," each with its own character, and engineered around LNG propulsion, shore-power connection, waste-heat recovery and other systems intended to move Royal Caribbean toward its goal of a net-zero cruise ship by 2035. Legend of the Seas follows the template set by her two earlier sisters, with the same overall dimensions — the line stated early on that Icon-class ships would remain a fixed length rather than growing ship by ship. Individual venues were varied between sisters; on Legend, for example, the Supper Club carries a Hollywood theme where Icon of the Seas used New York and Star of the Seas Chicago.

Construction of the third Icon began with first steel cutting in January 2024. The keel was laid on 7 October 2024. Because the hull is too tall for the Great Belt Bridge in Denmark once fully fitted out, the class's funnel arrangement was designed so the ship could be height-modified for the passage from the Baltic to open water, as her sisters had been before her.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

The ship was ordered on 18 December 2019 as the third unit of the Icon programme, then known simply as "Icon 3." Her name was not revealed until 18 February 2025, when Royal Caribbean announced that she would be Legend of the Seas — the first time the company had recycled a fleet name onto a newbuild. She was floated out at Meyer Turku on 2 September 2025 and moved to the outfitting pier. Sea trials followed in April 2026, covering some 2,400 nautical miles, and she was delivered to Royal Caribbean on 10 June 2026. After passing under the Great Belt Bridge on 19 June 2026, she made her maiden voyage on 4 July 2026, opening a summer season in the Western Mediterranean — the first time a ship of this size had been based in Europe. Her godmother is retired U.S. Air Force General Lori J. Robinson, the first woman to lead a major Unified Combatant Command in U.S. history, with the naming celebration timed to the ship's U.S. arrival in Fort Lauderdale around Veterans Day, 11 November 2026.

Career by operator

Years Name Operator
2026–present Legend of the Seas Royal Caribbean International

Legend of the Seas has had a single name and a single operator. Her career to date consists of her debut Western Mediterranean season in summer 2026, followed by a 13-night transatlantic repositioning to Fort Lauderdale, from where she was assigned to Caribbean service as the largest cruise ship ever to sail from Port Everglades.

Onboard character

The defining idea of the Icon class is the neighbourhood ship: instead of a single stack of public rooms, the vessel is divided into themed districts aimed at different ages and moods, mixing waterparks, surf simulators, skywalks and pools with quieter retreat areas. As of her entry into service, Legend of the Seas carried seven pools, 20 bars and 28 restaurants. The design language — a vast central volume, extensive glazing and resort-scale water attractions on the open decks — set the visual standard for very large cruise ships in the mid-2020s, and Legend is the ship that carried that design language to Europe for the first time.

Major refits and incidents

No refits have taken place; the ship entered service in 2026. One incident during construction is on record: on 2 December 2025 a fire broke out in the engine room while she was fitting out at Meyer Turku. It was not expected to affect, and did not affect, the construction schedule, and the ship was delivered on time the following June.

Sister ships and class

The Icon class, built by Meyer Turku, comprises Icon of the Seas (entered service 2024), Star of the Seas (2025) and Legend of the Seas (2026), with a fourth ship, Hero of the Seas, following in 2027 and further units announced beyond that. All share the same basic dimensions and the LNG-powered plant, making the class, as of 2026, the largest class of cruise ships ever constructed.

Fate and where she is now

Legend of the Seas is in active service with Royal Caribbean International, at the start of what is expected to be a long career as one of the three joint-largest cruise ships in the world.
