Overview
Mein Schiff 2 is a large cruise ship built for TUI Cruises, the German line owned jointly by TUI AG and the Royal Caribbean Group, and delivered by Meyer Turku in Finland in January 2019. She is the second ship to carry the name for TUI — and untangling that fact is essential to understanding her, because the first Mein Schiff 2 is a completely different hull: the 1997-built former Celebrity Mercury, which sailed for TUI under this name from 2011, was renamed Mein Schiff Herz in 2019 precisely to free the name, and now sails as Marella Voyager, covered elsewhere in this directory. The present ship is a newbuild, a stretched development of TUI's earlier Meyer Turku ships, and at her delivery she and her sister Mein Schiff 1 were the largest ships ever built for the line.
The dataset row for this hull is minimal: name, operator, a 2019 launch year and active status, and nothing else. The researched record is much fuller — IMO 9783576, Meyer Turku yard number 1393, 111,500 GT, 315 metres long — and is used in the prose below, with the dataset's gaps logged in the batch notes. Nothing about the dataset row is wrong; it is simply nearly empty.
Key specifications
On the figures given by her builder's yard list and contemporary delivery reporting, Mein Schiff 2 measures 111,500 GT, about 315–316 metres long with a beam of about 36 metres, and carries up to about 2,894 passengers at double occupancy — delivery reporting also quoted total passenger figures above 3,100 including upper berths — with a crew of around 1,000. She has 1,437 cabins on the ship-technology reporting of her delivery. She is Malta-flagged, registered at Valletta, like the rest of the modern TUI fleet. Her power plant, on CruiseMapper's researched summary, comprises four Wärtsilä diesel engines totalling 48 MW, with azimuthing podded propulsion of 28 MW combined — the standard arrangement for TUI's Turku-built generation.
Design and construction
Mein Schiff 2 belongs to the enlarged version of TUI's "Blue Motion" generation of Turku-built ships. The first four newbuilds for the line, Mein Schiff 3 to Mein Schiff 6 (2014–2017), were ships of about 99,500 GT and 295 metres. For the next pair the design was stretched by about 20 metres, growing to 111,500 GT and a materially larger passenger count, and the public areas were redesigned in detail — the delivery coverage singled out the show bar and the restaurant area forward of the class's signature aft "diamond" structure. Mein Schiff 1 of 2018 was the first of the stretched pair; Mein Schiff 2 followed as the yard's hull number 1393.
Physical construction began with keel laying on 5 October 2017 at Meyer Turku. She was floated out on 1 June 2018. Meyer Turku delivered her on 22 January 2019 — at Kiel, in Germany, rather than at Turku, a delivery location chosen, the yard explained, so that winter ice in the Turku archipelago would not damage the silicone antifouling coating on her new hull. With her delivery, TUI's chief executive marked the end of the line's first expansion phase: six newbuilds, all from the one Finnish yard.
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
The naming history is the ship's most confusing feature, and it is a fleet-management story rather than a ship story. TUI had originally expected this pair of newbuilds to take later numbers in the sequence. Instead, as the two elderly ex-Celebrity ships that had founded the fleet were earmarked for transfer to sister brand Marella, the newbuilds took their names: the 2018 ship became the new Mein Schiff 1, and this ship became the new Mein Schiff 2. The old holder of the name was renamed Mein Schiff Herz — "My Ship Heart" — in January 2019 to make way.
The new Mein Schiff 2 was christened at Lisbon on 9 February 2019 by the German singer Carolin Niemczyk. Her entry into service was phased: a delivery voyage to Kiel, an industry and preview sailing from Bremerhaven in late January, and then the Lisbon christening within her first commercial programme. No former name exists: she has been Mein Schiff 2 since before delivery.
Career by operator
| Period | Name | Operator | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019–present | Mein Schiff 2 | TUI Cruises | Newbuild; Meyer Turku hull 1393; delivered 22 January 2019 at Kiel; christened at Lisbon, 9 February 2019 |
The table is short because the career is simple: one name, one operator, one market — German-speaking premium cruising, sold on TUI's premium all-inclusive model. She is not the former Mein Schiff 2 of 2011–2019; that hull's career belongs to the Marella Voyager entry, and the two ships' records should never be merged.
Onboard character
The character of the Turku-built TUI ships is defined by a handful of design signatures carried across the generation. The most famous is the 25-metre outdoor pool — a genuinely long lap pool by cruise-ship standards — paired with a smaller lagoon pool. Aft, the glass "diamond" structure encloses speciality restaurants and bars in the area TUI calls the Große Freiheit, the social heart of the ship after dark. The design language is calm, contemporary German hotel style rather than themed spectacle, in keeping with a brand whose promise is space, quiet and included drinks and dining rather than attractions.
Mein Schiff 2, as the stretched version, simply has more of that character to go around: more cabins, larger restaurant areas, and the redesigned show bar noted at delivery. In the fleet's history she represents the moment TUI's newbuild programme matured — no longer proving that a German premium line could fill a new ship, but standardising the product at a larger scale.
Major refits and incidents
No major refit, conversion or serious incident for Mein Schiff 2 is recorded in the sources consulted for this guide. She is a young ship by industry standards, and her material history so far is the routine one of survey drydockings and hotel maintenance. Her first years of service, like those of the entire industry, included the pandemic shutdown period from 2020, when TUI, like every operator, suspended and then progressively restarted cruising; no ship-specific casualty from that period was verified in the sources used, and none is asserted. This section should be read as "none recorded in the sources consulted".
Sister ships and class
Mein Schiff 2's direct sister is the new Mein Schiff 1 (2018), the other stretched Blue Motion ship, and the pair were joined in 2024 by Mein Schiff 7, a further sister built to the same enlarged platform with methanol-ready propulsion. Behind them stand the four shorter ships of the original design — Mein Schiff 3, 4, 5 and 6 — making a six-plus-one family of Turku-built vessels that formed the whole of TUI's newbuild fleet until the much larger, LNG-fuelled, Fincantieri-built inTUItion-class ships Mein Schiff Relax and Mein Schiff Flow arrived from 2025. Mein Schiff 2 is therefore a middle child twice over: second of her stretched pair, and part of the last generation of conventionally fuelled TUI newbuilds.
Fate and where she is now
Mein Schiff 2 is in active service with TUI Cruises, as the dataset records and as fleet listings confirm. There is no sale, transfer or renaming on record. In line with this directory's evergreen policy, no current itinerary is stated. Her place in the record is as the ship that completed TUI Cruises' first newbuild expansion in January 2019 — and as a permanent caution to researchers: in the TUI fleet, a name is a fleet position, not a hull, and Mein Schiff 2 has been two entirely different ships.
