Overview

MSC Grandiosa was, on her delivery in October 2019, the largest ship in the MSC Cruises fleet and among the largest cruise ships in the world — the first of the Meraviglia Plus class, a lengthened and enlarged development of the Meraviglia design, and the fifth new ship MSC had taken in just thirty months of extraordinary expansion. Her name announces her role: the grand one. She introduced the class's stretched Mediterranean promenade with its 98.5 m LED sky dome, carried the line's digital assistant Zoe into every cabin, and was presented by MSC as its most environmentally advanced ship to date, with hybrid exhaust-gas cleaning and selective catalytic reduction fitted as built. Christened by Sophia Loren at Hamburg in November 2019, she is a defining hull of MSC's rise from European regional line to global giant.

Key specifications

The dataset records 181,541 GT, 332.0 m by 43.0 m, a maximum capacity of 6,334, 22.3 kn, and hull G34 at Chantiers de l'Atlantique, Saint-Nazaire. Class reporting adds the double-occupancy figure of about 4,842–4,888 guests and a crew of about 1,704, across 19 decks. The dataset lists no class; she is the lead ship of the Meraviglia Plus class, logged here for the record. Her "launched 2019" in the dataset is her delivery year: her first steel was cut on 17 November 2017 — the ceremony at which her name was revealed — and she was floated out on 5 January 2019, completed sea trials that September, and was delivered on 31 October 2019.

Design and construction

The Meraviglia Plus design takes the Meraviglia platform — built around the indoor Galleria, a Mediterranean-style promenade under a changing LED sky — and stretches it: roughly 16 m more length than MSC Meraviglia herself, more cabins, a larger promenade (the Galleria Grandiosa, 93 m of it lined with shops and restaurants under a 98.5 m LED dome), an enlarged Yacht Club, and extra speciality dining including the French L'Atelier Bistrot. Environmentally she was the class's step forward: a hybrid closed-loop exhaust-gas cleaning system, a selective catalytic reduction plant to cut nitrogen oxides, an advanced wastewater treatment system, shore-power readiness and a package of energy-saving measures, which MSC promoted as making her its cleanest ship at delivery. She also carried two Cirque du Soleil at Sea productions in a purpose-built lounge, part of MSC's long-term partnership with the company, and the fleet's Zoe voice assistant, a first at sea.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

Steel-cutting on 17 November 2017 at Saint-Nazaire — the yard then trading as STX France, reverting to its historic Chantiers de l'Atlantique name during her construction — revealed the name MSC Grandiosa. She was floated out on 5 January 2019, delivered on 31 October 2019, and christened on 9 November 2019 at Hamburg in the largest naming ceremony MSC had staged: godmother Sophia Loren, naming her fifteenth MSC ship, cut the ribbon as the vessel passed the Elbphilharmonie under a blue light installation, with some 5,000 people watching from a shoreside "MSC Village". Her maiden passenger voyage followed on 23 November 2019, opening her inaugural Mediterranean season.

Career by operator

Years Name Operator
2019– MSC Grandiosa MSC Cruises (dataset operator: MSC Italian Cruises)

A single-operator ship: ordered, delivered and operated by MSC Cruises as the fleet's flagship of her moment. Her early career was shaped by the 2020 pandemic shutdown, which interrupted her first full season months after her debut; she was among the MSC ships used in the line's phased restart of Mediterranean cruising. Her structural role in the fleet is as the first of three Meraviglia Plus ships — followed by MSC Virtuosa (2021) and MSC Euribia (2023) — bridging the Meraviglia class and the still larger World class that followed.

Onboard character

The Meraviglia generation's defining idea is the Galleria: an interior promenade, roofed by an LED sky that changes from dawn to stars, functioning as the ship's main street of restaurants, bars and shops. On Grandiosa the formula was scaled up — a longer dome, more speciality venues, the Degas art experience (an immersive exhibition of Edgar Degas' Danse Dessin etchings, a cruise-ship first), dedicated children's areas developed with LEGO and Chicco, and the Cirque du Soleil theatre-lounge. It is the mature statement of MSC's 2010s design language: a very large ship organised around one spectacular interior street rather than a top-deck attractions park.

Major refits and incidents

No major refit has been required in her short career, and no casualty is recorded for her in the sources used for this guide. Her construction-to-service story contains one milestone worth recording as an incident of timing rather than of the ship: delivered in October 2019 as the industry's flagship of the year, she had been in service barely four months when the global fleet shutdown of March 2020 suspended her programme.

Sister ships and class

The Meraviglia Plus class comprises MSC Grandiosa (2019), MSC Virtuosa (2021) and MSC Euribia (2023) — the last completed as an LNG-powered development of the design. All three are enlargements of the Meraviglia class proper (MSC Meraviglia, 2017, and MSC Bellissima, 2019), sharing the Galleria concept, the Saint-Nazaire builder and the general arrangement, with the Plus ships' extra length given to cabins, promenade and Yacht Club space. Grandiosa is the class leader and the ship that set its pattern.

Fate and where she is now

She is an active MSC Cruises ship, one of the largest in the fleet, with no change of name, operator or role announced. As the first Meraviglia Plus hull she remains the reference ship of MSC's biggest pre-World-class generation.
