Overview

Nieuw Statendam is a Pinnacle-class cruise ship for Holland America Line, built by Fincantieri at Marghera, Italy, and delivered in November 2018. She is the second of the three Pinnacle-class ships — after Koningsdam (2016) and before Rotterdam (2021) — and the sixteenth ship Fincantieri had built for Holland America at her delivery. The dataset leaves her class field blank; the Pinnacle classification is the builder's own, stated on Fincantieri's ship page and throughout her published histories.

Her name is a lineage claim. Nieuw Statendam — "New Statendam" — is the sixth Holland America ship to carry the Statendam name, the first having sailed in the nineteenth century, and the prefix marks her as the modern bearer of one of the line's oldest names. At 99,902 GT and 2,666 passengers she is built to the size that has defined Holland America's modern fleet: the largest ships the line operates, sized to stay mid-market in an industry of much bigger vessels.

Key specifications

The dataset records Nieuw Statendam at 99,902 GT, 299.75 metres long and 35 metres in beam, with 2,666 passengers, a crew of 1,053 and a speed of 22.0 knots. Fincantieri's own data sheet agrees on tonnage, length and beam and clarifies the speed: 18 knots is her service speed and 22.2 knots her maximum — the dataset's 22.0 is the maximum figure, used here as filed. Her draught is 8 metres, she has 12 passenger decks and 1,339 passenger cabins, and her maximum persons on board in the builder's figures is 4,173.

Her plant is diesel-electric: four MaK 12V43C generator sets of 12,600 kW each, 50.4 MW installed, driving two ABB Azipod units of 14,000 kW each. Secondary summaries quote slightly variant tonnage and crew figures (99,863 GT and about 1,025 crew appear in size comparisons); the builder's and dataset's figures are used here, and the variants are logged in the batch notes.

Design and construction

Nieuw Statendam was ordered on 19 December 2014 as the second Pinnacle-class ship. First steel was cut at Marghera in July 2016, her keel was laid on 20 March 2017, and she was launched on 6 December 2017. She was completed in November 2018 and acquired by Holland America on 29 November 2018.

The Pinnacle design was Fincantieri and Holland America's step up from the line's Vista and Signature classes: a longer, wider hull with the line's traditional proportions kept, an optimised hull form for energy efficiency, and interiors by Adam D. Tihany and Bjørn Storbraaten built around a music theme — the design idea Fincantieri itself highlights for this ship. Against her sister Koningsdam, she was a refinement rather than a redesign: eight more staterooms, reconfigured family and single cabins, and a reworked Pinnacle Suite, the small adjustments of a second-in-class ship whose prototype had already been tested in service.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

The launch took place at Marghera on 6 December 2017. The naming came later and on another continent: Nieuw Statendam was christened on 2 February 2019, after she had already entered service, by her godmother Oprah Winfrey, at a ceremony in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Post-delivery christenings are unusual but not rare, and in this case the delay was a matter of scheduling the sponsor and the ship together.

She had begun operating on 5 December 2018 — the maiden-voyage date in the dataset — with her first sailing from Italy toward her inaugural season. So the sequence for this hull runs: launched December 2017, delivered November 2018, in service December 2018, christened February 2019. The dates are all sourced, and the out-of-order christening is a fact of her record, not an error in it.

Career by operator

Period Name Operator

One name, one operator, no interruption beyond the industry-wide pandemic suspension that affected her whole fleet in 2020–21, which is not a change of operator or name and is recorded here only for completeness.

Onboard character

The Pinnacle ships' era-defining idea is music as architecture. Where rival premium ships organised their identity around chefs or designers, Holland America built Nieuw Statendam's public rooms around live performance: a two-deck World Stage theatre, and a deck of dedicated music venues — a blues club, a rock room and a duelling-piano bar — developed under the line's Music Walk concept, with instruments and the visual language of music carried into carpets, artwork and sculpture throughout the ship. Fincantieri's own summary of the ship leads with exactly that: contemporary style, classic elegance, and a music-inspired theme in many public areas.

It is a conservative ship in the ways her brand intends — traditional dining room, promenade, a two-level pool arrangement with retractable cover for northern sailing — and that conservatism is the character. The Pinnacle class was Holland America declining the industry's race to size and spectacle, and instead selling a refined version of the classic cruise ship to the passengers who still wanted one.

Major refits and incidents

No grounding, fire, collision or other major incident involving Nieuw Statendam is recorded in the sources consulted. Her notable yard period to date is a drydock in November 2023, reported in secondary ship summaries as a refresh that included an expanded casino with a separate non-smoking section — hotel maintenance of the standard kind for a five-year-old ship, not a structural refit. No reconstruction or re-engining has been reported for this hull.

Sister ships and class

The Pinnacle class comprises three ships, all built by Fincantieri at Marghera: Koningsdam (2016), Nieuw Statendam (2018) and Rotterdam (2021). The three are near-identical in principal dimensions — the same length, beam and nominal tonnage on the builder's sheets, with cabin counts and passenger totals differing only marginally from ship to ship. Cunard's Queen Anne is sometimes grouped with them in yard terms as a Marghera product of similar scale, but she is a different design for a different brand and is not a Pinnacle-class sister.

Fate and where she is now

Nieuw Statendam is active and in service with Holland America Line, the operator that ordered her. She has never been sold or renamed. As the middle ship of a three-ship class still central to her line's fleet, her recorded fate is simply continued service, with no withdrawal reported or announced in the sources consulted.
