Hapag-Lloyd Cruises inherits one of the longest histories in passenger shipping. Its parent, Hapag-Lloyd, was formed in 1970 by the merger of the Hamburg-American Line, founded in 1847, and North German Lloyd, founded in 1857 — two rivals that had carried passengers and mail across the Atlantic in the age of the ocean liner, and whose predecessor is credited with an early pleasure cruise in 1891. The modern cruise fleet in this directory is deliberately small and divided into two clear types. Europa and Europa 2, at 28,890 GT and 42,830 GT, are classic luxury cruise ships, long regarded among the most highly rated at sea. Alongside them are three identical expedition ships — Hanseatic Nature, Hanseatic Inspiration and Hanseatic Spirit, each 15,540 GT — built for polar and remote-region cruising with ice-class hulls and a scientific, exploratory character.
