Star Clippers is a sailing cruise line founded in 1989 by the Swedish entrepreneur and classic-boat enthusiast Mikael Krafft, with a single, unfashionable idea: to recreate the golden age of the nineteenth-century clipper ship with modern materials, modern comforts and real sail power. Its first two ships, Star Flyer, launched in 1991, and her twin Star Clipper, launched in 1992, were the first sailing clippers built since 1910. Each is a four-masted barquentine of just 2,298 GT, carrying around 170 passengers under more than 3,300 square metres of sail, with engines held in reserve for calms and manoeuvring. In 2000 Krafft completed the fleet with its flagship, Royal Clipper, a five-masted, fully square-rigged ship modelled on the German windjammer Preussen of 1902. At 5,000 GT with 42 sails, she is recognised as the largest full-rigged sailing ship in service, and no comparable vessel has been built since. The three ships in this directory are the whole story: a fleet unchanged in concept for three decades, in which the ship, the rig and the act of sailing remain the product.
