Overview
Maasdam was a Holland America Line cruise ship of the Statendam class — the S class — built by Fincantieri in Italy and delivered in 1993. She was the fifth Holland America ship to bear a name drawn from the rivers of the Netherlands (the Maas), and she belonged to the generation with which the line, newly under Carnival Corporation ownership, renewed itself in the 1990s: mid-sized, traditionally styled ships with teak promenades, serious art collections and a loyal North American clientele. The dataset preserves her as a Holland America ship, and most of this guide follows that framing; her post-Holland America career, in which the published record has moved well beyond the dataset row, is flagged explicitly where it occurs.
Key specifications
The dataset records IMO 8919257, 55,000 GT, a length of 220.0 m, a beam of 30.83 m, a speed of 22.6 knots and Fincantieri hull number 5882. The ship's published record gives slightly different figures: tonnage is commonly published as 55,575 GT (55,451 GT in some registry-derived accounts) rather than the dataset's round 55,000. Published dimensions of 219–220 m by about 30.8–30.9 m are consistent with the dataset. Capacity published for the ship is about 1,258 passengers at double occupancy with a crew of about 580 — neither figure is in the dataset. Her machinery was diesel-electric, built around Sulzer engines manufactured under licence by Grandi Motori Trieste, and her published class designation is S class, of which "Statendam class" in the dataset is the common alternative name.
Design and construction
The S class was designed in the shadow of a regulatory question. During planning there were concerns that the design would not meet the vessel-stability requirements of SOLAS 90; the hull form was largely based on that of Costa Classica, from Holland America's sister brand Costa Cruises, and the successful sea trials of the lead ship, Statendam, settled the matter. Maasdam was ordered in November 1989, designated hull 5882 at Fincantieri's Monfalcone yard, and her keel was laid in early 1992. She was floated out in December 1992 — the dataset's "launched 1993" is her delivery year rather than the float-out. She was completed on 26 October 1993 and cost a reported US$180 million.
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
Holland America names its ships from Dutch geography and history, and Maasdam — after the Maas river and the dam-naming tradition of Statendam, Ryndam and Veendam — was the fifth ship of the line to carry the name. She was christened by the actress June Allyson at Port Everglades, Florida, on 3 December 1993, and her maiden voyage into the Caribbean followed, with one registry-derived account giving 17 December 1993 for her first cruise from Port Everglades to St Thomas. The dataset compresses all of this into "1993" for both launch and maiden voyage, which is correct at the year level.
Career by operator
The dataset's operator history records Holland America Line and Ambassador Cruise Line, and its name field records only Maasdam. The published record contains more chapters, flagged here because they postdate or sit outside the dataset row:
| Name | Operator | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Maasdam | Holland America Line | 1993–2020 |
| Aegean Myth | Seajets (laid up; did not trade) | 2020–2022 |
| Renaissance | Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC) | From 2023 |
In Holland America service the ship worked primarily in North American waters. The Ambassador connection in the dataset is explicable in the published record: in 2025 CFC agreed to merge with Ambassador Cruise Line, forming the Ambassador Group, so the ship's operating group and the dataset's second operator converge.
Onboard character
As built for Holland America, Maasdam was a statement of the line's traditionalism at the moment of its Carnival-era renewal. Her teak promenade deck ran the length of the ship in the old manner, and her interior motifs paid homage to the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch West India Company — the seventeenth-century trading enterprises from which the line consciously drew its identity. The centrepiece of her atrium was a sculpture by Luciano Vistosi comprising more than 2,000 pieces of glass, and antique artefacts and artworks were distributed throughout the public rooms. The S class also introduced to the line the features that became its signatures: a multi-deck atrium, a two-deck main dining room and show lounge, and a Lido pool under a retractable roof. The character was deliberately that of a smaller, art-filled, ocean-going hotel rather than a resort — the positioning Holland America kept for the class throughout its service.
Major refits and incidents
The ship underwent refurbishments in Holland America service in 2006 and 2011 at the Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport, part of the line's programme of keeping the S class current, including cabin and public-room renewal. One fatal accident is on her record: on 7 November 2018, while the ship was at anchor off Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, a passenger descending the gangway to a tender fell to the platform and died. Her most consequential "event," however, was commercial rather than nautical: the COVID-19 pandemic, during which Holland America sold the ship — a disposal treated in the career section above — ending a twenty-seven-year association in a fleetwide restructuring that also removed her sisters Veendam, Rotterdam and Amsterdam from the line in the same year.
Sister ships and class
The Statendam or S class comprised four ships built by Fincantieri: Statendam (lead ship, 1993), Maasdam (1993), Ryndam (1994) and Veendam (1996), with hull numbers in the 5881–5885 sequence — Maasdam's 5882 sits directly beside Ryndam's 5883, a pairing close enough that the two ships' histories are frequently confused. That confusion matters for this directory: Ryndam is the separate hull that later became Pacific Aria and then Celestyal Journey, while Maasdam's own later names are Aegean Myth and Renaissance. Readers cross-checking sister histories should hold the IMO numbers apart: 8919257 for this ship, 8919269 for Ryndam. All four S-class ships eventually left Holland America, the class dispersing to Australian, Greek and French operators — a typical afterlife for well-maintained mid-sized tonnage of the 1990s.
Fate and where she is now
The dataset records the ship as active under the name Maasdam for Holland America Line, with Ambassador Cruise Line as a second operator in her history. The published record indicates that this is a snapshot the world has moved past: sold in 2020 during the pandemic to the Greek ferry group Seajets and renamed Aegean Myth, laid up without trading, then sold in August 2022 to the new French operator Compagnie Française de Croisières, renamed Renaissance, refitted and returned to service in June 2023, with CFC's 2025 merger into the Ambassador Group following. The hull, IMO 8919257, is therefore best described as an active ship whose current identity the dataset does not capture — a discrepancy reported in full with this guide so the row can be corrected, rather than silently overwritten here.
