Overview
Spirit of Adventure is Saga Cruises' second purpose-built ocean ship, delivered by Meyer Werft in September 2020 and entered into service on 26 July 2021. She is the sister of Spirit of Discovery (2019), and together the pair replaced Saga's elderly secondhand fleet with a single, coherent product: boutique-scale, all-balcony, all-inclusive ships of about 58,000 GT and just under 1,000 guests, built specifically for the British over-50 market that Saga exists to serve.
Her start in life was dictated by the pandemic. The ship was complete, delivered and ready in the autumn of 2020 — and had almost no legal way to earn a living for the better part of a year, her inaugural cruise postponed again and again until July 2021. She is therefore also a document of her moment: a brand-new ship whose first year was spent waiting, and whose successful debut, when it came, marked Saga's emergence as a newbuild operator in its own right.
A naming caution for directory readers: this Spirit of Adventure is the 2020 Meyer Werft ship, IMO 9818084. Saga had previously operated a different, much older ship of the same name — the former Berlin — and the dataset carries that earlier hull under a separate row. The two ships share a name and an operator and nothing else; this guide covers only the 2020 hull described in this row.
Key specifications
Her dataset particulars are complete and agree well with her Wikipedia infobox: IMO 9818084, Meyer Werft Papenburg hull 715, 58,199 GT, 236.6 m by 31.2 m, a maximum capacity of 999 passengers, a crew of 540 and a service speed of 18 knots, with propulsion totalling 21.6 MW. Small variants circulate — Saga's own launch material quoted 58,250 GT, and some current Saga presentation gives 987 guests against the build specification's 999 — and are noted here rather than treated as errors; the registered and build figures above are the stable ones. She has 554 cabins, every one with a balcony, and is registered in London.
Her dataset row is unusual in the wider dataset for carrying a crew figure at all, a survival from the ship's own well-sourced article rather than a fleet-wide field.
Design and construction
Spirit of Adventure was built by Meyer Werft at Papenburg, Germany, as yard number S.715. Saga ordered her on 22 September 2017, initially as an option exercised once Spirit of Discovery's announcement had been matched by rising profits in the group's travel business. Her keel was laid on 3 June 2019, and she was built in Papenburg's covered dock in the yard's usual manner before being floated out on 24 July 2020 and making the traditional conveyance down the River Ems to the sea at the end of August 2020.
The design is a close development of her sister's: the same hull dimensions, the same all-balcony accommodation and boutique scale, the same Siemens eSiPod propulsion arrangement reported for the pair, and interiors deliberately differentiated from Discovery's so that the two ships read as individuals rather than copies. Saga's brief was explicit — a British boutique hotel that happens to sail: no casino, no climbing wall, no arcade, and public rooms sized for under a thousand guests, with the space ratio that permits.
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
She has carried the name Spirit of Adventure from her ordering; it revives the name of Saga's earlier ship, as Spirit of Discovery had revived another fleet name. She was floated out on 24 July 2020 — the launch date the dataset's 2020 year correctly reflects — delivered on 29 September 2020 at Emden, and christened on 19 July 2021 by her godmother, Commodore Inga Kennedy, a former Royal Navy officer and senior nursing figure, whose naval-medical background suited a ship debuting under pandemic protocols.
The maiden voyage followed on 26 July 2021, the date the dataset records. It had been a long time coming: at delivery, the inaugural cruise was planned for February 2021, and even that was a postponement from the original August 2020 intention. The July 2021 debut, once made, stuck — she celebrated her first operating anniversary in July 2022.
Career by operator
| Period | Name | Operator |
|---|---|---|
| 2021–present | Spirit of Adventure | Saga Cruises |
One name, one operator, as the dataset records — the whole of her short career. In substance it divides into the long pandemic wait of 2020–2021, in which a completed ship sat out the shutdown alongside her sister, and her service since July 2021 as one half of Saga's two-ship ocean fleet, operating the line's all-inclusive programme for the British market. She and Spirit of Discovery between them are the fleet: there is no third Saga ocean ship, which makes each hull unusually important to its operator.
Onboard character
Her character is the clearest statement of the modern Saga idea. Everything is included — Saga built its modern reputation on folding excursions, drinks, gratuities, insurance and chauffeur transfers into the fare — and everything is aimed at adults over 50 travelling from British ports. The physical ship matches the commercial idea: a grand Living Room atrium as the social hub, a choice of speciality restaurants included in the fare, a theatre, a library, a spa with a thermal suite and hydrotherapy pool, and those 554 balcony cabins, so that the balcony is not an upgrade but the standard product.
Against her sister she was given a distinct decorative identity — different artwork, different feature venues and a different mood in the public rooms — on the same bones. In era terms she represents the boutique end of 2020s newbuilding: at a moment when the industry's headlines were 6,000-guest ships, Saga spent newbuild money on a ship for 999.
Major refits and incidents
No major incident is recorded against her, and no refit beyond routine dry-dock work (one secondary source refers to a 2024 refurbishment ). Her defining early "event" was not an incident but the pandemic delay itself: delivered in September 2020 into a closed industry, she spent her first ten months as a finished ship without passengers, a fate she shared with a handful of newbuilds worldwide and one that shaped Saga's finances and programme for two years.
Sister ships and class
Her sister is Spirit of Discovery (2019), Meyer Werft hull 714, of the same dimensions and capacity, from which she differs in interior design and detail. The pair have no formal class name in the dataset, and none is in general use; they are simply Saga's two-ship newbuild class. She should not be confused with the earlier Saga Spirit of Adventure, the ex-Berlin of 1980, a wholly different ship that left the fleet before this one arrived.
Fate and where she is now
Spirit of Adventure is in active service with Saga Cruises, as the dataset records, as one of the two ships on which the line's entire ocean business rests. A young, purpose-built ship with a secure niche, she faces no question of fate beyond continuing in the role she was drawn for.
