Overview

Viking Mars is an ocean cruise ship operated by Viking, delivered in 2022 as the seventh ship of the line's ocean fleet. She is a member of the series of near-identical, Fincantieri-built "small ships" with which Viking — until 2015 known only for river cruising — established itself in ocean cruising: vessels of about 48,000 tons carrying 930 guests in all-veranda accommodation, adults only, and designed around destination-focused, culturally oriented voyaging rather than onboard amusement. The frozen dataset for this ship is exceptionally thin — launch year and status are almost all it records — so this guide distinguishes carefully between what the dataset states and what published fleet sources establish, and logs the omissions in full.

Key specifications

The dataset gives only a launch year of 2022 and an active status. Published fleet sources are consistent on the rest, and the figures are given here in prose because the dataset omits them: 47,842 GT; a length of about 227 m and a beam of about 28.8 m; 465 staterooms for 930 passengers; and a crew of about 465. Baird Maritime's delivery review adds a draught of about 6.7 m, MAN diesel machinery, a maximum speed of 20 knots and a cruising speed of 17 knots. Her IMO number is not recorded in the dataset or in the fleet sources consulted. She is Norwegian-flagged, in common with the rest of the ocean fleet.

Design and construction

Viking Mars was built by Fincantieri at its Ancona yard in Italy — the builder field is blank in the dataset, and the omission is logged — to the standard Viking ocean design developed by naval architects and engineers with interiors by London-based SMC Design and Los Angeles-based Rottet Studio. The design's principles were set by the first ship, Viking Star, in 2015 and repeated with minimal change across the series: an all-veranda ship, no interior cabins, a high proportion of open deck, and engineering to the "Safe Return to Port" standard. Contemporary reporting described her float-out in 2021, ahead of her 2022 delivery — the dataset's "launched 2022" appears to record the delivery year, and the point is logged. She was delivered to Viking in May 2022.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

The name follows the ocean fleet's celestial sequence — Star, Sea, Sky, Orion, Jupiter, Venus, Mars — adopted as Viking extended its original river-fleet naming into the heavens. She was officially named in May 2022 in Malta, in a small private ceremony, by her godmother Lady Fiona Carnarvon, the Countess of Carnarvon, who appeared by video link from Highclere Castle — the setting of Downton Abbey, with which Viking has a long association — while a bottle of Norwegian aquavit, rather than champagne, was broken on the hull. Viking and Lady Carnarvon each marked the naming with donations to 25 charities. Her maiden season followed immediately in European waters.

Career by operator

Period Name Operator
2022–present Viking Mars Viking Cruises / Viking Ocean Cruises

She has had one operator and one name. The dataset's operator history names simply "Viking Cruises"; the ocean fleet trades under the Viking Ocean Cruises identity within the wider Viking group. Her career pattern is the fleet pattern: long, port-rich seasons across several regions in a year, with repositioning voyages between them — her maiden season took her from European waters to a first season in Australia and New Zealand waters at the end of 2022, a typical Viking deployment for a new ocean ship.

Onboard character

Her character is the Viking ocean formula, of which she is a late and faithful example. Scandinavian-influenced interiors in light woods and textiles; an Explorers' Lounge with panoramic windows for watching the sea; a Wintergarden for afternoon tea; the Aquavit Terrace at the stern with an infinity pool — a signature of the class; and a spa built around a Nordic bathing sequence including a snow grotto. Equally defining are the deliberate absences with which Viking launched the fleet: no guests under 18, no casino, no formal nights, no onboard amusement rides — enrichment lectures, resident experts and destination talks instead. With all 465 staterooms having verandas and a maximum of 930 guests, the ship is engineered to feel smaller than her 47,842 tons.

Major refits and incidents

No refit of consequence has fallen due for a ship delivered in 2022, and no casualty or major incident involving Viking Mars is recorded in the sources consulted for this guide. Her delivery and naming proceeded on the programme set for her, in the first full post-pandemic season of Viking's ocean expansion. This section should be re-checked at the guide's next revision, as routine dry-dock work will accumulate.

Sister ships and class

She is one of the long series of Viking ocean sisters built by Fincantieri to the same design: Viking Star (2015), Viking Sea (2016), Viking Sky (2017), Viking Orion (2018), Viking Jupiter (2019), Viking Venus (2021), Viking Mars (2022), Viking Neptune (2022) and Viking Saturn (2023), with the enlarged Viking Vela generation following from 2024. Trade sources describe the ships as the Viking Ocean class; Fincantieri's own launch material for her sister Viking Sky describes the type as of about 47,800 tons with 465 cabins for 930 passengers and a total capacity, with crew, of over 1,400 people.

Fate and where she is now

The dataset lists her status as active and her fate as operating, and all fleet sources agree: Viking Mars is in service with Viking, Norwegian-flagged, in the prime of a career that began in 2022. Of the ships in this group she is among the least documented in the frozen dataset relative to the completeness of her published record — the ship herself is entirely conventional for her class, and it is the dataset row, not the vessel, that is the outlier.
