Overview
Ambience is the flagship of the British start-up Ambassador Cruise Line — and a ship with one of the most travelled identities in this directory. She was delivered in 1991 as Regal Princess for Princess Cruises, spent thirteen years from 2007 as P&O Cruises Australia's Pacific Dawn, survived a failed sale, a collapsed buyer and a brief career as the cryptocurrency "seastead" Satoshi, and entered service as Ambience in April 2022. Designed originally for Sitmar Cruises by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, with a curved forward superstructure inspired by a dolphin's profile, she is a genuine piece of cruise design history as well as a working ship. Few hulls illustrate the directory's one-page-per-hull principle better: four marketed names, three cruise careers and one floating-residence episode, all on IMO 8521232.
Key specifications
The dataset records 70,285 GT, a length of 245.1 m, a beam of 32.2 m, a speed of 20.0 knots, a maximum capacity figure of 2,020, Fincantieri hull 5840, and IMO 8521232. Her article confirms the tonnage, dimensions, hull number and IMO, and adds a crew of about 660 and a current capacity of about 1,500 passengers — the dataset's 2,020 is best read as an earlier-configuration maximum, from her high-density Australian years, rather than her Ambassador-era complement. Two dataset fields are wrong. Its launched year, 2007, is in fact her transfer year to P&O Cruises Australia; she was launched on 29 March 1990. Its yard, "Montalcino," is a garbling of Monfalcone, the Fincantieri yard near Trieste where she was built. Her article gives a cruising speed of 20 knots and a maximum of 22.5 knots, consistent with the dataset's 20.0. Tonnage as built was also quoted as 69,845 GRT in older sources; the modern figure used here is GT.
Design and construction
The ship began as part of Sitmar Cruises' ambitious mid-1980s newbuilding programme for the North American market. After negotiations with Fincantieri — then owned by the Italian government and eager for the work — Sitmar ordered two roughly 70,000 GT ships for delivery in 1990 and 1991. The pair kept the basic layout of Sitmar's French-built Fairmajesty project but were re-skinned by Renzo Piano, whose curved forward superstructure, inspired by the bottlenose dolphin, remains the design's instantly recognisable feature — a streamlined "dolphin" brow over the bridge that set these ships apart from the slab-sided tonnage of their day. In 1988, with the ships in early construction, Sitmar was sold to P&O, and the pair passed to P&O's Princess Cruises brand. The second ship was launched on 29 March 1990 as Regal Princess, ran sea trials on 5 June 1991, and was delivered on 20 July 1991 to Astamar, a P&O subsidiary, at a cost recorded as US$276.8 million.
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
She was launched as Regal Princess — there was no earlier name — and named in New York on 8 August 1991 by the former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, her godmother. Her maiden voyage followed in August 1991, the date the dataset records. Each later identity had its own naming moment: as Pacific Dawn she was christened on 8 November 2007 by the Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman, and as Ambience she was christened at Tilbury in April 2022 by the Olympic athlete Sally Gunnell, immediately before her Ambassador debut. The one naming that never happened also belongs in the record: Cruise & Maritime Voyages, which had agreed to take her in 2021, intended to rename her Amy Johnson, after the pioneering aviator — a plan abandoned when CMV collapsed in 2020, and therefore a name she never actually carried in service.
Career by operator
| Name | Operator | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Regal Princess | Princess Cruises | 1991–2007 |
| Pacific Dawn | P&O Cruises Australia | 2007–2020 |
| Satoshi | Ocean Builders | 2020–2022 |
| Ambience | Ambassador Cruise Line | 2022–present |
As Regal Princess she began on Fort Lauderdale–Caribbean winters and Alaska summers alongside her sister Crown Princess, spent southern summers from Sydney from 2000, and moved to Mediterranean and Baltic seasons from 2003. Planned transfers to A'Rosa (2004) and Ocean Village (2006) were both cancelled before she finally moved within the P&O group to P&O Cruises Australia in late 2007, emerging from refurbishment as Pacific Dawn — the first P&O Australia ship with an all-white hull, marking the brand's 75th anniversary in Australia, and for over a decade a fixture of South Pacific cruising from Australian ports. Retired by P&O in 2020 after the CMV sale collapsed, she was sold for about US$9.5 million to Ocean Builders Central and renamed Satoshi, for use as a floating residence off Panama; the project failed on insurance, and after a resale she was laid up at Bar, Montenegro, before Ambassador — a start-up led by former CMV executives — was announced as her operator on 13 May 2021.
Onboard character
Her onboard character was set by Piano's 1991 design and then re-set twice. As built she was a North American premium ship of her era: spacious for her tonnage, with the dolphin-brow profile, a traditional range of lounges and dining rooms, and none of the waterparks or neighbourhood districts of later ships. The Pacific Dawn refurbishments Australianised her — most visibly in the 2014 refit that added "The Edge" adventure activities, including a zip line and climbing wall, and refreshed the main restaurant and pool deck — turning a 1991 premium ship into a relaxed, family-oriented Australian resort ship. Ambassador's 2021–22 refit at the Viktor Lenac yard in Croatia reversed the emphasis again, toward a traditional, adults-focused British product, and included technical work that brought her to IMO Tier III emissions compliance. The constant through all three characters is the hull and profile Piano drew: still, in her fourth decade, one of the most handsome silhouettes in service.
Major refits and incidents
Her major refits are dated signposts of her career changes: a major refurbishment in 2000 as Regal Princess; the extensive 2007 conversion to Pacific Dawn; drydock refurbishments in 2010 and November 2014 in Australia; and the 2021–22 Ambassador conversion in Croatia, after which her Tilbury debut was briefly delayed by supply-chain problems, and she was detained for a day in May 2022 after a port state control inspection found fuel-system deficiencies, being released the following day. Incidents in service include a four-minute grounding on departure from Cairns on 15 March 2001, from which she freed herself under her own power, and a norovirus outbreak on an August 2003 Copenhagen–New York crossing that affected 217 people and caused her to skip her Greenland and Newfoundland calls and arrive in New York a day early, fully disinfected for her next sailing. Both are recorded from the accounts cited in her article.
Sister ships and class
Her sister is Crown Princess (1990), the first of the Piano-designed pair, built alongside her at Monfalcone. The two ships then diverged completely: Crown Princess left Princess in 2002 and passed through A'Rosa as A'Rosa Blu, AIDA as the first AIDAblu, Ocean Village as Ocean Village Two and P&O Australia as Pacific Jewel, before a final spell as Karnika in India and scrapping in 2020. Ambience is therefore the survivor of the pair — the only one of Sitmar's two Italian flagships still in service. The design itself, sometimes grouped as the Crown Princess class, was a one-off pairing rather than a series, which is why the dataset records no class for this hull.
Fate and where she is now
The dataset records her as active with Ambassador Cruise Line, and her article confirms her in service under that brand, registered at Nassau, Bahamas. Her story came within one insurance refusal of ending at the breakers in 2020–21 — she was at one point slated for scrapping at Alang — and her return as Ambience in April 2022 is one of the COVID era's genuine reprieves. She is, at the time of the sources used, Ambassador's founding ship, later joined by a sister-in-service, Ambition. Whatever her remaining career holds, her historical position is already clear: a Renzo Piano design icon of 1991, a thirteen-year mainstay of Australian cruising, and the ship that launched a British cruise line in 2022.
