Overview

Arvia is a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered cruise ship built by Meyer Werft at Papenburg, Germany, for P&O Cruises, and — jointly with her sister Iona — the largest cruise ship ever built for the British market. Ordered in January 2018 as the second of P&O's Excellence-class (also marketed as Excel-class) ships, she was originally planned for the first half of 2022 but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, finally being delivered in December 2022 and making her maiden voyage just before Christmas that year.

At 185,581 GT and 344 metres, she represents the full arrival of the mega-ship era at Britain's oldest cruise brand: a ship conceived from the keel up as a self-contained sunshine resort, with a retractable-roof pool dome, a high-ropes course 54 metres above the sea, a swim-up bar and more than a dozen restaurants, and powered by the cleaner-burning fuel that defines her class.

Key specifications

The dataset records Arvia at 185,581 GT, 344.08 metres in length and 42.0 metres in beam, built as Meyer Werft hull 716. It leaves her class, capacity, crew and speed blank; Wikipedia supplies the missing figures: she is an Excellence-class ship of 16 complete guest decks plus three partial decks, with a maximum capacity of 6,685 passengers, a crew of 1,782, and a service speed of 22 knots from an installed power of about 61.7 MW driving two propulsion units of 18.5 MW each.

The dataset's own fate field, a prose fragment rather than a clean statement, describes her accurately in substance: joint-largest cruise ship built for P&O Cruises and the UK market, originally planned for early 2022 and delayed to December 2022 by the pandemic. Her displacement is about 87,276 tonnes and her draught about 8.8 metres.

Design and construction

Arvia is a development of Iona's Excellence-class design — itself the P&O expression of Carnival Corporation's Excellence platform — adapted more strongly to warm-weather deployment. Construction officially began in February 2021 with steel cutting; the ship's floating engine room unit, built by Neptun Werft, formed an early major module. Her keel was laid on 15 February 2022.

The defining engineering feature is her LNG propulsion: like Iona, she runs primarily on liquefied natural gas, the marine industry's most advanced widely deployed fuel technology at her delivery, with an optimised hull form to reduce drag. She was floated out of Meyer Werft's building dock on 27 August 2022, left the yard on 5 November 2022 for her Ems conveyance and sea trials, and was handed over in December 2022 — Wikipedia dates her completion and acquisition to 15 December 2022, while the delivery ceremony and press coverage fall in the same mid-December window.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

The name Arvia means "from the seashore" — chosen, P&O said, to reflect a design intended to bring guests closer to the sea, sky and shore, with more outdoor space and sea-facing venues than any earlier ship in the fleet. The name was announced well before delivery, in step with the marketing of the ship as the line's "sunshine ship".

She was floated out on 27 August 2022 and, after delivery, made her maiden voyage on 23 December 2022. Her formal naming ceremony followed in service: she was christened on 16 March 2023, sponsored by the singer Nicole Scherzinger — an unusually late christening that reflects how the pandemic-era delivery schedule compressed the usual sequence of launch, naming and first cruise.

Career by operator

Arvia has had a single operator and a single name.

Name Operator Years
Arvia P&O Cruises 2022–present

Her career so far is that of a new flagship-class ship settling into her brand's deployment pattern. She was designed and marketed from the outset for warm-weather service — the design brief P&O described at delivery as "the epitome of a sunshine resort" — and she entered service at the head of the fleet alongside Iona, the two Excellence-class ships together accounting for the largest share of P&O's capacity. She has never been renamed, transferred or chartered.

Onboard character

Arvia's era-defining features are about moving the resort outdoors and upwards. The SkyDome — carried over from Iona — is a pool complex under a retractable glass roof, a relaxed pool environment by day that converts to dining and entertainment, including aerial performances and open-air cinema, by night. Above it, the Altitude deck introduced P&O's first high-ropes experience at sea: the Altitude Skywalk, with two courses 54 metres above the ocean, Altitude Minigolf beneath it, and a splash zone.

At the stern, a swim-up bar and an infinity pool overlooking the wake underline the sunshine-resort brief. Inside, the ship carries the Excellence-class atrium and a dining line-up of a scale new to the brand — a dozen restaurants plus further casual venues at launch, including Green & Co with its Mizuhana sushi bar, developed for this ship, and a retro American diner. These are design statements of her launch era rather than a deck plan: the largest British-market ship of her time arranged around light, glass and outdoor space.

Major refits and incidents

Arvia is too young to have a refit history of substance: at the time of the sources used for this guide she had not yet undergone a major refurbishment, and no dry-docking beyond routine warranty and maintenance work is documented.

No major incident — fire, collision or grounding — is recorded against her in those sources either. Her principal historical disruption came before she carried a single passenger: the COVID-19 pandemic's effect on the Papenburg build programme, which pushed her delivery from the first half of 2022 to December 2022, a delay recorded in the dataset itself.

Sister ships and class

The dataset leaves her class blank, but she is an Excellence-class ship — the Carnival group platform that also produced ships for AIDA, Costa and Carnival Cruise Line. Within P&O Cruises her only direct sister is Iona (2021), the first of the pair and, until Arvia's arrival, the largest ship built for the British market; at 185,581 GT Arvia marginally exceeds her. Her wider Excellence-class cousins include AIDAnova and AIDAcosma, Costa Toscana and Costa Smeralda, and Carnival's Mardi Gras and her sisters — all variations on the same LNG-powered platform.

Fate and where she is now

The dataset records her status as active. Arvia is in service with P&O Cruises, jointly the largest ship in the fleet and the newest expression of the brand — a pandemic-delayed ship whose career, at the time of writing, is still in its opening chapter.
