Overview
Viking Octantis is Viking's first expedition ship — the vessel with which the world's largest river-cruise company, already transformed into an ocean-cruise line by the Viking Star class, pushed into polar expedition cruising. Purpose-built to Polar Class 6, she was designed to do two jobs that rarely share a hull: Antarctic expedition seasons, and summer expedition cruising in North America's Great Lakes, a market no modern expedition ship had been built for. She is named for Sigma Octantis, the south pole star. Two of the dataset's dates for her are impossible as printed — a maiden voyage (2021) before her launch (2022) — and the researched chronology below corrects the sequence while leaving the dataset box as frozen.
Key specifications
The dataset records only her IMO number (9863194), a builder entry of "Søviknes Verft," launch 2022 and maiden voyage 2021; tonnage, dimensions, capacity, crew, speed and class are all blank. The builder's and operator's published figures are: 30,150 GT; length 205 m; beam 23.5 m; draught about 6 m; Polar Class 6 ice class; 378 guests in 189 staterooms; four MAN engines driving two ABB Azipod units; and a speed of about 18 knots. Her builder was Vard, Fincantieri's Norwegian subsidiary — the dataset's "Søviknes Verft" is Vard's Søviknes yard in Norway, where she was outfitted and delivered, rather than the company's name. Her hull was built at Vard Tulcea in Romania.
Design and construction
The two-ship expedition order was placed in April 2018 (contracts effective that July), Viking's first with Vard. The design brief was comfort in ice: a straight, ice-going bow, a long hull with fin stabilisers for ocean passages and U-tank stabilisers to calm the ship when stationary alongside ice or at anchor, and a Polar Class 6 rating, meaning operation in medium first-year ice in summer and autumn conditions. Her signature space is The Hangar, an enclosed marina inside the hull from which expedition craft are launched through shell doors, sheltered from polar weather — the expedition equivalent of a garage — serving a fleet of Zodiacs, kayaks, special operations boats and two small submarines. A working science laboratory and a science-focused lounge put research staff and their programme at the centre of the ship rather than in a converted corner. The hull was floated out at Vard Tulcea on 22 December 2020 and towed to Søviknes, arriving in July 2021 for outfitting by a workforce that at its peak exceeded 1,000 people aboard.
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
She was named for Sigma Octantis, the southern pole star — the navigational anchor of the hemisphere she was built to explore. The corrected chronology is: floated out December 2020; delivered at Søviknes on 22 December 2021; maiden voyage in January 2022, an Antarctic expedition season; and formally christened in 2022 by her godmother Liv Arnesen, the Norwegian explorer who in 1994 became the first woman to ski solo and unsupported to the South Pole, and who sailed on the ship's first two Antarctic expeditions. Reports differ on the christening's date and place — her article records 30 September 2022, while contemporary trade reporting describes a New York ceremony in April 2022. The dataset's "launched 2022, maiden voyage 2021" appears to transpose the delivery and christening years.
Career by operator
| Name | Operator | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Viking Octantis | Viking Cruises (Viking Expeditions) | 2021–present |
A single-operator career so far, and a dual-season one by design: Antarctic expeditions in the southern summer, Great Lakes expeditions in the northern summer, with repositioning voyages between. In May 2022 she transited the Welland Canal — reported as the largest passenger vessel to have done so at the time — on her way into the lakes. The dataset's operator history also lists "Viking Holdings Ltd," the line's parent holding company, which is a corporate entry rather than a separate operator.
Onboard character
Viking translated its house style into expedition form. The Scandinavian design language of the ocean ships — light wood, clean lines, a residential living room, a Nordic spa with a snow grotto — is carried over almost intact, so a Viking ocean guest is meant to feel at home; but the centre of gravity shifts to Expedition Central, the Aula lecture theatre and the science laboratory, and to the working deck of boats and submarines in The Hangar. At 378 guests she is large for an expedition ship, and the design wager is that expedition cruising can be scaled without becoming a conventional cruise — that the lectures, landings and laboratory, not cabaret, remain the programme.
Major refits and incidents
She is a new ship with no refit history to record. One caution for researchers: the widely reported November 2022 rogue-wave incident in the Drake Passage involved her sister Viking Polaris, not this ship, and is not part of Octantis's record. No incident involving Viking Octantis herself was found in the sources consulted.
Sister ships and class
She is the first of two identical expedition ships built by Vard for Viking: Viking Octantis (2021) and Viking Polaris (2022). The pair form Viking's expedition class in its own right, distinct in hull, builder and purpose from the Fincantieri-built ocean fleet. At delivery, Vard noted she was the largest vessel the group had built to that point — a measure of how far upmarket expedition tonnage has moved.
Fate and where she is now
The dataset lists her as active and operating for Viking Cruises, which she is — a front-line ship in the first half-decade of her career, with her polar and Great Lakes seasons established as the twin pillars of Viking's expedition programme. Her historical footnote is already secure: the ship that took a mass-market-premium brand into the polar expedition business, and the first modern expedition ship built with the Great Lakes in mind.
