The R class began as Renaissance Cruises' programme of eight near-identical ships, all built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique in France and delivered between 1998 and 2003 at a uniform 30,277 GT. Their appeal was scale in reverse: small, yacht-like ships with a country-house hotel character, designed for longer, port-intensive cruising rather than resort-ship spectacle. When Renaissance failed, the sisters scattered, then gradually regrouped under premium brands. Six of the eight appear in this phase of the directory — Azamara Journey, Azamara Quest, Azamara Pursuit and Azamara Onward with Azamara, and Insignia and Regatta with Oceania Cruises — a remarkable survival rate that underlines how well the original design has aged.
