Built by Fincantieri in Italy between 1992 and 1993, the Statendam class — Holland America Line's S class — comprises ships of between 55,000 and 55,877 GT. They were a turning point for the line: its first series of newbuilds constructed in Italy, and a deliberate exercise in classical restraint, with teak promenades, a two-deck show lounge, a crow's-nest observation bar and interiors decorated with Dutch maritime art and antiques rather than resort spectacle. Sized for longer, port-intensive voyages, the design proved exceptionally durable. The three sisters listed here began as Holland America's Statendam, Maasdam and Ryndam, and all remain in service today with Celestyal Cruises, Ambassador Cruise Line and Nicko Cruises.
