Cruise ships of the 1950s

The five 1950s ships here are the last generation of classic liners and coastal steamers, preserved or still working long after their contemporaries were scrapped. The flagship is Rotterdam of 1958, Holland America's 'Grande Dame', preserved as a hotel and museum in her home port of Rotterdam. Norway's Nordstjernen, listed here from 1955, spent decades on the Hurtigruten coastal route and still sails as a protected classic. Finland's Bore is preserved at Turku, and Brazil Maru, built for Japanese emigrant service to South America, is preserved in China. Strangest and most significant is Savannah of 1959, the world's first nuclear-powered merchant ship, built as an 'Atoms for Peace' demonstration with accommodation for just 60 passengers, and now preserved at Baltimore. Elegance and experiment, side by side.
