Overview
Carnival Horizon is the second ship of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, delivered by Fincantieri in 2018 as the 26th vessel in the Carnival fleet. She took the innovations her sister Carnival Vista had introduced two years earlier — the SkyRide aerial bicycle track, an IMAX theatre at sea, a Havana-themed cabin enclave — and added firsts of her own, including the first Dr. Seuss-themed water park and an onboard barbecue smokehouse with its own brewery.
At about 133,500 GT she and Vista were jointly the largest ships in the Carnival fleet at her debut, a title they yielded in 2019 to their slightly larger sister Carnival Panorama. Her career has been that of a front-rank fleet ship from the day she entered service.
Key specifications
The dataset records Carnival Horizon at 133,500 GT — the nominal class figure; Wikipedia gives a measured 133,596 GT — 321.5 metres long (Wikipedia: 323.63 metres), 37.1 metres in beam at the waterline, with a capacity of 3,960 passengers. That capacity is double occupancy; maximum capacity is 4,977, and her crew numbers about 1,450. She has 15 passenger decks, MAN diesel generating sets and diesel-electric propulsion through two ABB Azipod XO units.
Two dataset fields need flagging. The service speed is given as 18.0 knots, well below the figures in ship records — Wikipedia lists 21.5 knots, and the Vista-class overview gives 23 knots. And the dataset's class label, "Vista (2002)-class", is misleading: Horizon belongs to the Vista class introduced in 2016, not to any 2002 design. Both points are logged in the batch notes.
Design and construction
Carnival Horizon was ordered on 19 December 2014 and built by Fincantieri at its Marghera yard near Venice as hull 6243. She was laid down in April 2016 and launched — floated out — on 10 March 2017, though the dataset lists her launch year as 2018, her delivery year. The Vista-class design is based on the Dream class but lengthened by some 17–18 metres, with a different stern and a different main atrium arrangement, and with the class's signature move of opening the ship outward: more outdoor dining, bars and seating along the promenades, and venues arranged to face the sea.
She was delivered in the spring of 2018 and entered service at once, making her maiden voyage on 2 April 2018 as the dataset records.
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
The name Horizon was chosen, Carnival's president Christine Duffy said at the announcement, to reflect the ship's connection with the sea and the "boundless array of options" aboard — a name about views, appropriate for a class whose design slogan was a new view of cruising.
Her christening came after her maiden voyage, in the modern Carnival manner: she began service on 2 April 2018 with a Mediterranean sailing from Barcelona, and was formally christened on 23 May 2018 in New York by her godmother, the singer and actress Queen Latifah, during her first American season.
Career by operator
Carnival Horizon has served a single operator under a single name.
| Name | Operator | Years |
|---|---|---|
| Carnival Horizon | Carnival Cruise Line | 2018–present |
Her inaugural programme followed the classic new-ship pattern: a debut season in the Mediterranean, a transatlantic crossing to New York in May 2018, a summer of American east-coast cruising, and then a move to year-round Caribbean service from Miami that autumn. She has remained a front-line Caribbean ship of the fleet ever since, with no renaming, transfer or charter in her record — though, like the rest of the world fleet, her service was interrupted by the industry-wide COVID-19 suspension of 2020–21 before cruising resumed.
Onboard character
Horizon is the Vista class in its most complete original form, and her character is the class's catalogue of era-defining novelties. The SkyRide — twin suspended tracks on which riders pedal recumbent bikes around the top deck, some 45 metres above the sea — remains the single most recognisable feature. Below it sit the first IMAX theatre installed on a cruise ship, the WaterWorks aqua park with its 455-foot Kaleid-O-Slide raft slide, and, new on Horizon, the Dr. Seuss WaterWorks play area.
The Havana concept — a block of tropically styled cabins and suites around a Cuban-themed bar and pool, reserved to those guests by day — carried the "ship within a ship" enclave idea into the Carnival mainstream. Her dining novelties were equally of their moment: Guy Fieri's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse combined with a working Brewhouse serving craft beers brewed on board, and the fleet's first teppanyaki restaurant, Bonsai Teppanyaki. Destination-style "smart" destination elevators, which assign passengers to a car by deck rather than using buttons inside, were another Vista-class signature.
Major refits and incidents
Horizon is a young ship with no major refit yet in the public record beyond routine dry-dock maintenance; accounts of the fleet place a first significant refurbishment cycle in the mid-2020s rather than in her early years.
No major casualty is recorded against her in the sources used for this guide. Her principal service disruption was the fleet-wide COVID-19 pause of 2020–21, which she shared with every ship in this batch of her era.
Sister ships and class
The Vista class, built by Fincantieri in Italy (with later units also built in China for the Chinese market), comprises Carnival Vista (2016), Carnival Horizon (2018) and Carnival Panorama (2019) for Carnival Cruise Line, together with the Venice-subclass ships built for Costa — later transferred into Carnival service as Carnival Venezia and Carnival Firenze — and the Adora Cruises ships in China. The dataset's "Vista (2002)" label appears to borrow the disambiguation style used for an earlier unrelated class name; the class Horizon belongs to dates from 2016.
Fate and where she is now
The dataset records her status as active. Carnival Horizon remains in Carnival Cruise Line service under her original name — a ship still in the first phase of what is ordinarily a thirty-year career, and one of the defining designs of her decade in the Carnival fleet.
