Overview

Celebrity Reflection is the fifth and final ship of Celebrity Cruises' Solstice class, delivered in 2012 and still the closing statement of one of the most influential cruise-ship designs of its decade. The Solstice ships, begun with Celebrity Solstice in 2008, moved the premium segment decisively up in size while keeping a design-led, adult character — real grass on the top deck, a glassblowing studio, and interiors by named designers rather than themed decoration. Reflection took that formula one step further, literally: she was built slightly larger than her four sisters, with an additional deck of cabins and new suite types, making her the largest Celebrity ship of her era. She has spent her whole career with Celebrity Cruises.

Key specifications

The dataset records 125,366 GT, a length of 319.0 m, a beam of 37.4 m and a speed of 24.0 knots. Reference sources agree closely: Wikipedia's infobox gives the same tonnage, length and beam, a draught of 8.6 m, 17 decks, and a crew of 1,271. The dataset's capacity figure of 3,046 matches the figure commonly published for the ship; contemporary launch coverage described her variously as a ship of about 3,000 guests, the small variations reflecting double-occupancy versus maximum-berth counting. Her machinery is conventional diesel-electric by the standards of her class: two MAN 14V48/60CR and two MAN 12V48/60CR engines driving two ABB XO Azipods.

Design and construction

Reflection was built by Meyer Werft at Papenburg, Germany, as hull S. 691, at a reported cost of about US$750 million. She was ordered on 24 March 2011 and laid down in September 2011 — a fast start made possible because she was an evolution of a proven design rather than a clean-sheet ship. Meyer Werft builds under cover in its Papenburg hall and delivers ships down the River Ems; Reflection was floated out in August 2012 and handed over on 9 October 2012. The design changes over her sisters were concentrated at the top of the ship: an extra deck allowed additional cabins and suites, including a large two-bedroom Reflection Suite whose shower, cantilevered in glass over the ship's side, became the much-reproduced publicity image of the launch.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

The ship was christened on 1 December 2012 in Miami — after, unusually, she had already begun revenue service. Her maiden voyage had departed Amsterdam on 12 October 2012, a nine-night repositioning cruise to Barcelona calling at ports including Zeebrugge, Le Havre, Gijón, Vigo and Málaga, as Cruise Industry News recorded on the tenth anniversary of the sailing. The Miami naming followed her first Atlantic crossing. Her four godmothers broke with the celebrity-godmother convention: Jovanka Goronjic, Megan Mathie, Helen O'Connell and Rosey Rodriguez were all Celebrity employees whose lives had been touched by breast cancer, continuing a Solstice-class tradition of godmothers connected to the disease.

Career by operator

Years Name Operator
2012–present Celebrity Reflection Celebrity Cruises

That single line is the whole table. Reflection was built for Celebrity Cruises, is owned within the Royal Caribbean Group, is registered at Valletta, Malta, and has never been sold, chartered away or renamed. In a directory organised by hull rather than by name, she is the simplest kind of entry: one name, one operator, one continuous career since October 2012.

Onboard character

The Solstice class's era-defining idea was that a 125,000-ton ship could be sold on calm rather than on noise. The Lawn Club — half an acre of real grass on the top deck — was the class signature from the first ship onward, and Reflection added a Lawn Club Grill, where guests could grill alongside the ship's chefs. Around it sat the class's other hallmarks: a large, light-filled main dining room, a cluster of specialty restaurants, a glass-enclosed adult solarium pool, and a two-storey library. Reflection's own additions — the extra deck, expanded suite accommodation including the Reflection Suite, and a conference/"hideaway" style retreat space — pushed the class gently toward the suite-enclave direction the whole premium industry later took.

Major refits and incidents

No major casualty attaches to this hull in the sources consulted. Her significant drydock milestone was a "Celebrity Revolution" refurbishment — the fleet-wide modernisation programme that refreshed staterooms and public spaces across Celebrity's older ships — which CruiseMapper's ship history dates to a drydock beginning 2 February 2023. Like the rest of the world fleet, she was laid up during the Covid-19 suspension of cruising in 2020–21 and returned to service as the industry restarted; no fire, grounding or collision involving the ship was found in the sources used for this guide, and none is claimed.

Sister ships and class

The Solstice class numbers five ships, all built by Meyer Werft: Celebrity Solstice (2008), Celebrity Equinox (2009), Celebrity Eclipse (2010), Celebrity Silhouette (2011) and Celebrity Reflection (2012). The first four are near-sisters of about 122,000 GT; Reflection is the enlarged final unit at 125,366 GT in the dataset. The class succeeded Celebrity's Millennium class and was itself succeeded in the fleet's growth story by the Edge class from 2018, which took the brand into a different design language — outward-facing spaces and a moving platform — leaving the Solstice ships as the definitive expression of the preceding, inwardly serene era.

Fate and where she is now

The dataset lists her status as active and her fate simply as "Operating," and nothing in the researched sources contradicts that. She remains in Celebrity Cruises service, the youngest ship of her class and, in tonnage terms, still among the larger premium ships of her generation. No sale, transfer or retirement has been announced for the hull, and this guide records none.
