Overview
Celebrity Silhouette is a Solstice-class cruise ship operated by Celebrity Cruises, part of Royal Caribbean Group. Delivered by Meyer Werft in July 2011, she was the fourth of the five Solstice-class ships, and the first of the class's enlarged final pair: slightly longer and heavier than Solstice, Equinox and Eclipse, with changes on the top deck that replaced her elder sisters' glassblowing studio with a grill restaurant and cabana-style alcoves around the class's signature real-grass lawn.
Like all her sisters she has spent her entire career with one operator under one name, and she remains a core ship of Celebrity's premium fleet.
Key specifications
The dataset records Celebrity Silhouette at 122,000 GT, 315.0 m long and 36.8 m in beam, with a maximum capacity of 2,886 passengers and a speed of 24.0 knots. Her ship's article and classification records give the more precise measured figures of 122,210 GT and 319 m in length overall, and those are used in the prose here; the dataset values are rounded. Propulsion and hotel power follow the class pattern of Wärtsilä diesel-electric machinery totalling about 67,200 kW driving Azipod units. Her build cost was estimated at ordering at roughly US$712.5 million, at about US$250,000 per berth.
Design and construction
Silhouette was ordered from Meyer Werft of Papenburg, Germany, on 18 May 2007 and built as hull number S.679. Her first steel was cut in March 2010. She is built to the same basic design as her three preceding sisters but measures roughly 400 tons larger and about six feet (just under two metres) longer than them, the extra volume used in part for the revised top-deck arrangement that distinguishes her from Eclipse and the earlier ships. The ship first left the Papenburg building dock in January 2011 and returned to it before her final float-out.
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
The ship's name was announced on 21 December 2009 — the winter solstice, a deliberate nod to the class name. She was floated out from Meyer Werft on 29 May 2011 and delivered to Celebrity Cruises on 18 July 2011. She sailed to Hamburg for her naming ceremony on 21 July 2011, where she was christened by her godmother Michelle Morgan, president and CEO of Signature Travel Network — an unusual choice of a travel-industry executive rather than a celebrity. Her maiden voyage followed on 23 July 2011, from Hamburg toward Civitavecchia, the port of Rome; the dataset records only the year.
Career by operator
| Years | Name | Operator |
|---|---|---|
| 2011–present | Celebrity Silhouette | Celebrity Cruises |
She is registered in Valletta, Malta, as are her sisters. Her inaugural season was spent in the Mediterranean, followed in the autumn of 2011 by a move to Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, for Caribbean sailings — the template for a career spent rotating seasonally between European and North American deployment, including winters based at Port Everglades, Florida, and summers from Southampton. No sale, charter or rename has interrupted a straightforward single-operator career.
Onboard character
Silhouette carries the Solstice class's defining feature — the Lawn Club, half an acre of real grass on the top deck — in its developed form: where the first three sisters placed a glassblowing studio beside the lawn, Silhouette and Reflection instead received the Lawn Club Grill, an interactive outdoor barbecue restaurant, and a row of private cabana-style Alcoves, with the Porch café nearby. The rest of the class character is intact: a high proportion of balcony staterooms, AquaClass spa cabins with their own restaurant, the adults-only Solarium, and an interior style built on natural materials and muted, design-led spaces rather than themed spectacle — the visual identity that marked Celebrity's move upmarket in this period. She also shares the class's technical character: the Solstice ships were marketed on their environmental credentials, with energy-efficient hull coatings, LED lighting and a photovoltaic array contributing to the design, and a passenger-space ratio generous enough to underpin the premium positioning the interiors promised.
Major refits and incidents
Her principal refit came under the fleetwide "Celebrity Revolution" modernisation programme: work began in January 2020 and was completed in February 2020, refreshing staterooms and public spaces and bringing her closer to the standards of the newer Edge-class ships, following similar treatment of her sisters. Her incident record is otherwise unusually thin for a ship of her size and age; the most serious event associated with the ship was a criminal case rather than a marine casualty — in November 2023 an onboard youth counsellor was charged in US federal court after admitting to the FBI that he had abused children aboard. No collision, fire or grounding attaches to the ship herself.
Sister ships and class
The Solstice class comprises Celebrity Solstice (2008), Celebrity Equinox (2009), Celebrity Eclipse (2010), Celebrity Silhouette (2011) and Celebrity Reflection (2012), all built by Meyer Werft at Papenburg. Silhouette and the final ship, Reflection, form an enlarged sub-group of the design; Reflection is larger again and carries more passengers.
Fate and where she is now
Celebrity Silhouette remains in active service with Celebrity Cruises under her original name, refurbished under the Revolution programme and working the seasonal Europe–North America rotation typical of her class.
