Built by Fincantieri in Italy between 1995 and 2000, the three Destiny-class ships measure between 101,509 and 102,853 GT — figures that made history. When the lead ship, Carnival Destiny, entered service in 1996 she was the first cruise ship ever to exceed 100,000 GT and the largest passenger ship in the world, too wide for the Panama Canal and a clear statement that Carnival was moving into the mega-ship era. The design set the pattern for Carnival's following classes, with a towering atrium, tiered show lounge and expansive open decks. All three sisters remain in service, transformed and renamed by vast refits as Carnival Sunshine, Carnival Sunrise and Carnival Radiance.
