Cruise ships of the 1910s

One ship represents the 1910s here, and her career spans almost the whole history of passenger shipping. Doulos Phos was launched in 1914 at Newport News, Virginia, as the freighter Medina, two years after Titanic. Converted to passenger service after the Second World War as Roma, she became Franca C for Costa in the 1950s — a genuine pioneer of Mediterranean and Caribbean cruising — and from 1977 sailed for three decades as Doulos, the world's largest floating bookshop and missionary ship. Until her retirement in 2009 she was recognised as the world's oldest active ocean-going passenger ship. Preserved today as a hotel on land at Bintan in Indonesia, she survives because she kept finding new work: cargo ship, emigrant ship, cruise ship and bookship, in a single hull launched before the First World War.
