Cruise ships of the 1920s

Only two ships launched in the 1920s survive in this directory, which says much about how completely the interwar liner fleet has vanished. The preserved one is Hikawa Maru, completed for Nippon Yusen's trans-Pacific service between Japan and Seattle and remembered as the 'Queen of the Pacific'. She survived the Second World War as a hospital ship — a rare fate that spared her — returned to passenger service, and is now preserved as a museum ship at Yokohama, her Art Deco interiors intact. Beside her sits Yankee Clipper of 1927, listed as laid up: a reminder that survival into this directory takes luck as well as steel. Together the pair frame the decade honestly — not the great Atlantic greyhounds, all long scrapped, but the quieter ships that outlived them.
