Overview

Koningsdam is a cruise ship operated by Holland America Line, a Carnival Corporation brand, and the first of the line's Pinnacle class. Delivered in the spring of 2016, she was at the time the largest ship ever built for Holland America, at just under 100,000 gross tons, and she marked a deliberate step-change in the line's design: a bigger, more contemporary ship that nonetheless kept the brand's traditional Dutch character. Her name — koning is Dutch for "king" — honours King Willem-Alexander, the first king of the Netherlands in more than a century, while keeping the "dam" suffix that Holland America passenger ships have carried since the nineteenth century. Registered at Rotterdam and flying the Dutch flag, she is one of the defining modern ships of a line founded in that city in 1873.

Key specifications

The dataset records Koningsdam at 99,836 GT, 296.0 metres long and 38.0 metres in beam, with a maximum passenger capacity of 2,660, built by Fincantieri as hull 6241, IMO number 9692557. Her register figures differ slightly — the ship's article gives 99,863 GT, a length of 299.65 metres and a hull beam of 35 metres, with the dataset's beam plausibly an overall figure. She has 12 passenger decks, diesel-electric machinery built around four MaK generator sets, and twin ABB Azipod propulsion units giving a service speed of 18 knots and a maximum of about 22 knots. Capacity is 2,650 passengers at double occupancy on the line's figures, and her crew numbers about 1,036. The dataset leaves her class field blank; she is the lead ship of the Pinnacle class.

Design and construction

Holland America ordered the ship on 26 October 2012, announcing a new class — Pinnacle — that would be an evolution rather than a copy of the preceding Signature-class design. Fincantieri built her at its Marghera yard near Venice. The keel was laid on 22 August 2014 and the hull was floated out in March 2015 (the dataset's "launched 2016" appears to record her delivery year, and is logged in the batch notes). She was completed in March 2016 and handed over on 31 March 2016. The design was entrusted to a team working to a musical brief — appropriate for a ship whose public rooms are organised around live music — and introduced a lighter, more open interior architecture than earlier Holland America ships, with a multi-deck atrium and an expanded top-deck pool area under a retractable cover. At delivery she was the line's largest and most contemporary vessel, the platform from which two further Pinnacle-class ships would follow.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

The name was announced in 2014 with the explanation that it both honoured the new king and opened a new era: while every Holland America ship since 1883 has ended in "dam", Koningsdam was a wholly original name in the line's history. The ship entered service on 8 April 2016 — the dataset's maiden-voyage date — beginning her career in the Mediterranean before her formal dedication. That dedication took place on 20 May 2016 at Rotterdam, the line's founding city, where Queen Máxima of the Netherlands named the ship. In a Holland America tradition, the Queen blessed the ship's bell by pouring champagne over it in the Lido pool area, signed the commemorative wall, and then performed the christening itself in the World Stage theatre, releasing the champagne bottle against the hull. Few modern cruise ships receive a genuinely royal naming; Koningsdam's ceremony underlined how central the ship was to the line's Dutch identity.

Career by operator

The ship has had one name and one operator throughout:

Period Name Operator
2016–present Koningsdam Holland America Line

Her career has been that of a front-line fleet ship: inaugural Mediterranean cruising in 2016, followed by the wide-ranging deployment pattern typical of Holland America's larger vessels, alternating seasonal programmes rather than a single fixed route. She remained in service through the industry's pandemic suspension and the fleet's subsequent return, and she continues as one of the three Pinnacle-class ships around which the modern Holland America fleet is organised. No transfer, charter under another brand, or renaming has occurred.

Onboard character

Koningsdam was the ship on which Holland America rebuilt its onboard identity around music. The centrepiece is the Music Walk, a linked group of venues offering a different live genre within a few steps: classical chamber music in Lincoln Center Stage, blues in B.B. King's Blues Club, and duelling pianos and chart hits at Billboard Onboard, with the Rolling Stone Rock Room added to the concept across the class. The two-deck World Stage theatre, with its wraparound high-definition screen, replaced the conventional show lounge with an immersive presentation space. Around those signatures the ship keeps Holland America's traditional markers — Dutch heritage touches, a serious culinary programme, and a calmer, more spacious feel than the family-megaship norm — but executed in a brighter, more contemporary idiom than the line's earlier ships. That combination, heritage brand on a modern platform, is the Pinnacle class's defining character.

Major refits and incidents

Koningsdam's record is notably clean. No major casualty, grounding, fire or collision involving the ship appears in the sources consulted for this guide. She has undergone the normal cycle of drydock maintenance and hotel refreshing; secondary sources report a refurbishment in 2023, but detail at the level a directory can rely on is thin, and the ship's article records no structural alteration or capacity change of note. Her gross tonnage as built has remained effectively unchanged, which itself distinguishes her from many contemporaries that have been stretched or heavily rebuilt.

Sister ships and class

Koningsdam is the lead ship of the Pinnacle class, Holland America's largest class. Her sisters are Nieuw Statendam (2018) and Rotterdam (2021), both built by Fincantieri at Marghera to the same basic design at just under 100,000 GT, each refining the class's music-led onboard concept. The dataset's blank class field notwithstanding, the three ships form a clearly documented class — same builder, same hull form, same approximate tonnage and capacity — and together they replaced the Vista and Signature classes as the line's standard large-ship platform. Koningsdam's historical place is as the prototype: the ship that proved Holland America could build at 100,000 tons without abandoning the identity that distinguishes it in the Carnival group portfolio.

Fate and where she is now

Koningsdam remains in active service with Holland America Line, listed in the dataset as operating, and serves alongside her two Pinnacle-class sisters at the top of the fleet. A decade into her career she is a mature but modern ship — young enough that no end-of-life question arises, established enough that her main story is already written: she was the ship that took a 143-year-old Dutch-American line to a new scale and a new design language, named for a king, christened by a queen in the line's home port, and built around the proposition that live music, well housed, could be the organising idea of a large cruise ship.
