Overview

Le Champlain is the second ship of Ponant's Explorers class, the series of small, ice-strengthened luxury expedition ships with which the French line renewed its fleet from 2018. She is named for Samuel de Champlain, the French explorer and founder of Quebec City known as "the Father of New France" — every ship in the class commemorates a French explorer. At under 10,000 GT with room for around 180 guests, she was designed to take Ponant's French-flagged, yacht-style cruising into polar and remote waters that big ships cannot work, while carrying the line's signature innovation, the Blue Eye underwater lounge. She remains in active Ponant service.

Key specifications

The dataset records 9,976 GT and a length of 131.46 m, with launch in 2017 and maiden voyage in 2018. Her own article gives a capacity of 180 passengers; operator and class material for the Explorers puts the beam at 18 m, with a shallow 4.7 m draught suited to coastal and polar expedition work, and a crew of about 112. The dataset's 2017 launch year is best understood as the year her keel was laid (20 April 2017); she was actually floated out — launched — on 29 March 2018, and the discrepancy is logged in the batch notes. Her tonnage is sometimes rounded to 9,900 GT or quoted as 10,700 GT in fleet listings; the 9,976 GT figure in the dataset matches Ponant's own published specification for the class.

Design and construction

The Explorers class was a deliberate step beyond Ponant's earlier Boreal-class ships: smaller, with an ice-strengthened hull (ice class 1C in Ponant's specification), diesel-electric machinery and dynamic positioning so the ship can hold station without anchoring on fragile seabeds. The dataset names Fincantieri as builder, reflecting Fincantieri's ownership of the Vard group at the time; the ship herself was built by VARD, with her hull constructed at VARD's Tulcea yard in Romania and her outfitting completed at VARD Søviknes at Ålesund, Norway, as yard number 849. She is registered at Mata Utu, Wallis and Futuna, under the French flag, as is standard for the Ponant fleet.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

Her keel was laid at Tulcea on 20 April 2017. Launched on 29 March 2018, she arrived at Søviknes on 27 April 2018 for final outfitting and was delivered to Ponant at Ålesund on 27 September 2018. She departed Honfleur, France, on 25 October 2018 for her maiden voyage, to Lisbon, Portugal. The name continues the class pattern of honouring French exploration: Samuel de Champlain (1567–1635) founded Quebec in 1608 and mapped much of northeastern North America — apt for a ship built to work the Canadian Arctic and the St Lawrence as readily as the Mediterranean.

Career by operator

Years Name Operator
2018– Le Champlain Ponant Cruises

She has had a single operator and a single name, which makes her career table the shortest kind there is — the interest lies in the work itself: luxury expedition cruising under the French flag for Ponant, the line founded in 1988 by French merchant-navy officers and now owned by Groupe Artémis. Within the fleet she took her place as the second of six near-identical Explorers delivered between 2018 and 2020, slotting between lead ship Le Lapérouse (2018) and Le Bougainville (2019), and below the much larger icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot in Ponant's expedition hierarchy.

Onboard character

The Explorers' era-defining feature is the Blue Eye, described by Ponant as the world's first multi-sensorial underwater lounge: a hull lounge below the waterline with two large eye-shaped windows, underwater projectors, hydrophones piping in the sounds of the sea, and seating designed to transmit the vibration of the water. It was a statement of intent for late-2010s expedition design — the experience of the environment, not the ship's own amusements, as the product. Around it, the class kept the established Ponant formula: all-balcony accommodation for fewer than 200 guests, French gastronomy, a marina platform aft for Zodiac boarding and water sports, and an expedition team for landings. A 188-seat theatre, panoramic lounge and pool deck complete a specification that packs a full luxury ship into a hull a tenth the size of a mainstream newbuild.

Major refits and incidents

No major refit or notable incident is recorded for Le Champlain in the sources used for this guide. As a 2018 ship she remains in her as-built configuration in essentials; routine drydock maintenance is not treated as a refit for directory purposes.

Sister ships and class

The Ponant Explorers class comprises six ships: Le Lapérouse (2018), Le Champlain (2018), Le Bougainville (2019), Le Dumont-d'Urville (2019), Le Bellot (2020) and Le Jacques Cartier (2020, ordered as Le Surville). All were built by VARD to the same basic design, each named for a French explorer — Lapérouse, Champlain, Bougainville, Dumont d'Urville, Bellot and Jacques Cartier. Le Champlain is distinguished within the class only by order of delivery and by the explorer she commemorates; the Explorer platform was itself later complemented, not replaced, by Ponant's polar icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot.

Fate and where she is now

She is an active Ponant ship, status confirmed in the dataset and her own article alike. No sale, charter change or rename has been announced for the hull; her future is as the second unit of the six-ship Explorers class in Ponant's expedition fleet.
