Princess Cruises was founded in 1965 by Stanley McDonald, who chartered the Canadian Pacific steamer Princess Patricia for winter cruises from Los Angeles to Mexico and named his new company after her. Princess helped define West Coast cruising, pioneered regular Panama Canal and Alaska programmes, and reached a far wider audience when its ships became the setting for the television series The Love Boat. The fleet below is a mainstream fleet of consistent character rather than extremes of size. The Coral-class pair, Coral Princess and Island Princess, at about 92,000 GT, are the smallest and were designed with Panama Canal transits in mind; the Grand and Crown classes occupy the 109,000 to 116,000 GT middle ground; six Royal-class ships follow at about 143,000 to 145,000 GT; and the Sphere class — Sun Princess and Star Princess, at 177,882 GT — introduced a larger, LNG-powered platform at the top of the fleet.
