This page covers Viking's ocean-going fleet. The parent company was founded by Torstein Hagen in 1997 as a river cruise line, and river ships remain the larger part of Viking's business; the ocean division was announced in 2013, as Viking Ocean Cruises, and its first ship, Viking Star, entered service in 2015. Viking deliberately applied a small-ship, destination-led philosophy to ocean cruising: an adult-oriented onboard culture and ships far smaller than mainstream contemporaries. That discipline shows in the fleet below, which is unusually uniform. Nine of the fourteen ships are near-sisters of about 47,800 GT, built to a single design; the newest ocean ships — Viking Vela, Viking Vesta and Viking Mira — are slightly larger developments at about 54,000 GT. Alongside them sit two distinct expedition ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, at 30,150 GT, built for polar and remote-region expedition cruising rather than conventional ocean itineraries.
