Overview
Silver Muse is an ultra-luxury cruise ship owned and operated by Silversea Cruises, delivered by Fincantieri in April 2017 as the line's new flagship and the lead ship of its Muse class. She was, at delivery, the largest ship Silversea had ever operated — yet "largest" is relative: at 40,791 GT for 596 guests, she offered a space ratio that mainstream ships several times her size cannot approach. Her design expanded Silversea's established formula — all-suite accommodation, butler service, high crew numbers — onto a bigger platform with an unusual emphasis on dining, with eight restaurants from the outset.
She proved successful enough to be repeated: two sisters followed, and the Muse platform set the template for Silversea's classic (non-expedition) fleet growth in the years before the still larger Nova class arrived.
Key specifications
The dataset records 40,791 GT, 212.8 m length, 27.0 m beam, a maximum capacity of 596 and Fincantieri hull number 6232, IMO 9784350 — figures her article confirms, adding a draught of 6.55 m, a cruising speed of 19.8 knots (about 21 knots maximum), 298 guest cabins and 411 crew. One discrepancy: her article's infobox gives the yard number as 6226, not the dataset's 6232. The difference is logged with this batch's notes; the spec box above follows the dataset as instructed. Her machinery, per her article, is diesel-electric: four 6.525 MW diesel engines driving generators that power two 8.5 MW electric motors on fixed-pitch propellers.
Design and construction
Silver Muse was constructed by Fincantieri at its Sestri Ponente yard in Genoa, Italy, and delivered to Silversea on 2 April 2017. She was the fleet's ninth ship. The design was an evolution rather than a rupture: Silversea's previous flagship, Silver Spirit (2009), had established the pattern of a larger classic ship for the line, and Muse scaled it up again while keeping the essentials — every cabin a suite, nearly all with verandas, and a passenger complement under 600 on a hull that could have carried far more in mainstream configuration. Eight dining venues on a 596-guest ship was her headline design statement: dining breadth as the luxury product, rather than entertainment scale.
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
She has carried the name Silver Muse since before delivery — "Muse" fitting Silversea's Silver-prefixed naming convention and giving the class its name. She was christened by Costanza Lefebvre d'Ovidio, of the family that founded Silversea. Delivered on 2 April 2017, she entered service that month; Silversea's own fleet history dates her debut cruise to 10 April 2017 in the Mediterranean. The dataset records 2017 for both launch and maiden voyage; her article does not give a separate float-out date in the material used here, so none is asserted.
Career by operator
| Period | Name | Operator |
|---|---|---|
| 2017–present | Silver Muse | Silversea Cruises |
A single-name, single-operator career. Within it, the corporate context shifted around her: Silversea, founded by the Lefebvre family, came under Royal Caribbean Group control during her early service years, and Silver Muse continued as the classic fleet's benchmark ship through that transition. Her working life has been the long-haul, destination-led deployment typical of Silversea's classic ships — extended voyages rather than short loops — including service as a world-cruise ship for the line. No sale, charter or rename has interrupted her career.
Onboard character
Her era-defining choice was to spend a flagship's space on restaurants and suites rather than attractions. Eight dining areas — among them the French fine-dining La Dame, the Italian La Terrazza, the Japanese Kaiseki and the pan-Asian Indochine generation of venues — made eating the ship's principal organised activity, supported by lounges, a spa, an observation library and a pool deck scaled for under 600 people. Suites are all ocean-view, attended by butlers, in the Silversea tradition. In later years the line's S.A.L.T. culinary programme — destination-linked dining and a dedicated kitchen and bar concept — was brought aboard, including in a 2025 refurbishment reported by the line. The essential character, though, dates from 2017: a quiet, formal, food-led small ship wearing a mid-size hull.
Major refits and incidents
Silversea lists her last refurbishment as 2025, in which, per operator and trade reporting, she received the S.A.L.T. Kitchen and S.A.L.T. Bar, suite upgrades and a refreshed pool deck — a significant culinary refit rather than a structural one. Earlier yard periods in her first decade were maintenance and hotel refreshes typical of the luxury segment, in which soft furnishings and venues are renewed on a short cycle. No major incident is recorded in the sources used for this guide; her career to date has been notably uneventful, which for a cruise ship is the desired state.
Sister ships and class
She is the lead ship of the Muse class: Silver Moon followed in 2020 and Silver Dawn in 2021, both built by Fincantieri to the same basic platform with the same 596-guest capacity, Moon introducing and Dawn extending the S.A.L.T. culinary concept that was later retrofitted to Muse herself. The three sisters formed Silversea's classic flagship trio until the larger Nova class (Silver Nova, 2023, and Silver Ray, 2024) superseded them at the top of the fleet — without displacing them from service.
Fate and where she is now
Silver Muse remains in active Silversea service under her original name and operator, less than a decade into her career — a settled flagship-generation ship whose class is complete and whose role, as the original Muse, is secure in the fleet's structure.
