Overview
Silver Moon is the second of Silversea Cruises' three Muse-class ships, delivered by Fincantieri at Ancona, Italy, on 30 October 2020 — in the middle of the pandemic shutdown, which makes her early career the strangest of any ship in this batch. She was built, trialled and delivered into a world with no cruising in it, waited out the industry's pause, and became, in Silversea's words at her christening, the first ultra-luxury cruise ship to set sail after the pandemic. She is also the ship that launched S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste), Silversea's destination-culinary programme — the idea that a ship's food should change with its geography. Note the dataset row for this hull is unusually thin: most of her particulars below come from the builder's and operator's own material and are flagged accordingly.
Key specifications
The dataset records only her launch year (2020), her operator and her active status; the IMO number, tonnage, dimensions, capacity, crew, builder and hull number fields are all blank. The figures published by Fincantieri and Silversea, and used in the rest of this guide, are: 40,700 GT; length 212.8 m; beam 27 m; 596 guests in 298 all-suite cabins (the operator's deck-plan material gives 288–298 suites depending on configuration ); crew 411; and a speed of 19.8 knots. She was built by Fincantieri at its Ancona yard. Her IMO number was not confirmed from the sources consulted and is not stated here.
Design and construction
Silver Moon is an evolution of Silver Muse (2017), the ship that re-founded Silversea's classic fleet around a larger, 40,000-ton platform. The contract — reported at about €310 million — was signed in September 2017, exercising an option attached to the Muse order, and the ship was built at Ancona rather than at Muse's Sestri Ponente yard. The design carries environmental and comfort notations that were selling points of the class: a "Green Star 3 Design" notation for pollution prevention in design, build and equipment, and class comfort notations for measured noise and vibration levels in passenger and crew spaces. Construction ran into Italy's COVID-19 lockdown in spring 2020; the Ancona yard recovered much of the lost time, and delivery slipped by only a couple of months against the original plan.
Her sea trials, run between Ancona and a dry-dock period at Trieste from 8 to 20 August 2020, were conducted under pandemic protocols with a reduced trials complement of about 320 people, temperature screening and distancing — her master, Captain Alessandro Zanello, who had also taken Silver Muse through her trials, called them "a little surreal."
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
The name continues Silversea's "Silver" celestial series and was chosen by the line's chairman, Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio. Her launch year in the dataset is 2020, the year of her completion and delivery; a float-out ceremony at Ancona preceded it in 2019. A first revenue voyage was promoted for 6 August 2020, Trieste to Rome — a date the pandemic made impossible; the ship was not yet delivered and cruising was suspended. Her actual entry into service came on 18 June 2021, when she began sailing from Athens (Piraeus). She was christened at Piraeus by her godmother Gaia Gaja, of the Italian Gaja wine family — a choice that was itself a statement about the S.A.L.T. programme the ship exists to showcase.
Career by operator
| Name | Operator | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Silver Moon | Silversea Cruises | 2020–present |
One name, one operator, no charters or transfers on record: her career table is a single line. The only eventful part of her timeline is the eight-month gap between delivery in October 2020 and her first guests in June 2021 — a brand-new flagship laid up by circumstance, then used as the line's standard-bearer for the restart of luxury cruising.
Onboard character
Silver Moon's defining design idea is culinary geography. The S.A.L.T. programme — launched on this ship — is built into the architecture rather than bolted on: a dedicated S.A.L.T. Kitchen restaurant whose menu changes with the region being sailed, a S.A.L.T. Lab test kitchen for hands-on classes in local dishes, and a S.A.L.T. Bar serving locally inspired drinks. Around that core she repeats the Muse-class pattern: all-suite accommodation with butler service in every category, a near one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio, and a set of small restaurants — including an enlarged La Dame, its walls decorated with handcrafted Lalique crystal panels — instead of a single main dining room. The era she defines is the moment luxury cruising stopped treating food as fuel or theatre and started treating it as the destination research itself.
Major refits and incidents
She is too young for a refit history: no structural alteration or major refurbishment has been reported since delivery, and routine dry-dock maintenance only is assumed. No incident — grounding, fire, collision or rescue — was found for this hull in the sources consulted. Her pandemic-delayed debut, recorded above, is the only disruption of note in her career so far.
Sister ships and class
She is the middle ship of the three-strong Muse class: Silver Muse (2017, built at Sestri Ponente), Silver Moon (2020, Ancona) and Silver Dawn (2021, Ancona), all at about 40,700 GT with 596 guests. Dawn added the line's Otium wellness concept to the same platform. The dataset leaves her class field blank; the Muse-class attribution is from Fincantieri and Silversea's own descriptions of the series. Together the three ships are the classic-fleet core around which Silversea's later, larger Nova-class ships were added.
Fate and where she is now
The dataset lists her as active and operating for Silversea Cruises, which she is — a front-line ship of the line's classic fleet with, on any normal reckoning, decades of service ahead of her. Her historical place is already fixed, though, less by her hardware than by her timing: the luxury ship delivered into the shutdown, and the first of her kind back to sea.
