Overview
Celebrity Xcel is the fifth Edge-class ship for Celebrity Cruises, built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire as yard number N34 and delivered in October 2025. The Edge class is the design that redefined Celebrity's fleet from 2018 onwards — ships built around outward-facing public spaces and a distinctive cantilevered platform on the starboard side — and Xcel extends it with a technical first: she is the first ship in the Celebrity fleet with a tri-fuel-capable engine installation, able to use methanol as a fuel option. She was ordered in April 2019 as what was then expected to be the fifth and final ship of the class.
Key specifications
The dataset records 141,262 GT and a double-occupancy capacity of 3,248 guests, and leaves her length, beam, crew and speed blank; the spec box above therefore states only dataset figures. Her own reference article gives a different, fuller set — 141,420 GT, 326.5 m by 39.5 m, 3,260 guests at double occupancy (3,937 maximum), 1,416 crew and 22.6 knots, with an IMO number of 9884136 — and those discrepancies are logged in this batch's notes for the dataset team rather than silently merged. No as-built versus post-refit distinction yet applies: the ship is new, and her figures are her delivery figures.
Design and construction
Construction began with the first steel cutting on 7 November 2023 at Saint-Nazaire, the ceremony at which her name was announced. The keel was laid on 13 June 2024, when the first 739-ton block was lowered into the dry dock; following maritime tradition, newly minted coins were welded into the block, their design featuring NASA's Saturn V rocket. She was floated out on 18 January 2025 and completed sea trials on 15 September 2025. Technically, her headline feature is the Wärtsilä 46F engine installation converted for tri-fuel operation, including methanol, which materially reduces local exhaust emissions of sulphur and nitrogen oxides and particulate matter when methanol is used; a new exhaust funnel was added between the main "X" funnel to serve the installation. Visually, she reintroduced the "X" logo on the funnel side in a new orange scheme and carries an enlarged hull name in the style of the wider Royal Caribbean Group fleet.
Naming, launch and maiden voyage
The dataset records her launch year as 2025 and her maiden voyage as 18 November 2025. Her reference article fills in the sequence: floated out 18 January 2025, delivered to Celebrity on 23 October 2025, preview sailings from Fort Lauderdale beginning 9 November 2025, and a naming ceremony at Port Everglades on 16 November 2025 with Brazilian chef Janaína Torres as godmother. The gap between the first preview sailing and the dataset's maiden-voyage date is logged in the build notes; both dates belong to her entry-into-service period in November 2025.
Career by operator
Celebrity Xcel has had a single name and operator.
| Period | Name | Operator |
|---|---|---|
| 2025–present | Celebrity Xcel | Celebrity Cruises |
Her career so far consists of her delivery and first season from Fort Lauderdale. This guide does not track her itineraries.
Onboard character
Xcel continues the Edge class's defining move — turning the ship's public life outward to the sea — while evolving several of the class's signature venues rather than repeating them. The space known as Eden on her earlier sisters was replaced by The Bazaar, a destination-focused venue, alongside a rebranded rooftop-garden restaurant, a flagship retail and museum space celebrating the brand, and a spa hydrotherapy room. These are recorded here as the ship's as-delivered design character, the form in which she entered service; venue line-ups change over a ship's life and are not tracked by this directory.
Major refits and incidents
No refit has been reported for Celebrity Xcel, and no significant incident involving her had been reported in the sources used for this guide at the time of writing. She entered service in November 2025 and this section is expected to remain empty for some years.
Sister ships and class
Celebrity Xcel is the fifth Edge-class ship, following Celebrity Edge (2018), Celebrity Apex, Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent (2023). All were built by Chantiers de l'Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire. A further class member, Celebrity Xcite, was in the programme behind her.
Fate and where she is now
Celebrity Xcel is in active service with Celebrity Cruises (status as recorded in the dataset), among the newest large ships in the Royal Caribbean Group fleet.
