Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries builds cruise ships only occasionally, but memorably, at its Nagasaki yard in Japan — a yard with a long passenger-ship heritage behind the five Phase 1 ships listed here. The earliest, Seaventure and Amadea, date from the start of the 1990s, when Nagasaki also built Crystal's first ships. Its landmark cruise work came in 2004 with Diamond Princess and Sapphire Princess, the first Princess Cruises ships built in Japan; the pair famously swapped names during construction after fire damaged one hull, yet both were delivered as the line's flagships. Nagasaki returned a decade later for AIDA's Hyperion class, represented here by AIDAperla: technically ambitious ships with hull air lubrication to cut fuel use, delivered in 2016 and 2017. Between those episodes, Mitsubishi stands as Asia's most accomplished large cruise builder.
