The Voyager class made Royal Caribbean the builder of the world's largest cruise ships at the turn of the century and introduced the first true megaship layout. All five ships were built by Kvaerner Masa-Yards at the Perno yard in Turku, Finland, delivered between 1998 and 2003 and ranging from 137,276 to 139,999 GT. The defining idea was the Royal Promenade, a shopping, dining and entertainment street running through the heart of the ship, overlooked by interior cabins with promenade-view windows — an inward-looking design that treated the ship itself as the destination. From Voyager of the Seas to Mariner of the Seas, the class set the template the line's later Freedom and Oasis classes would enlarge.
