Meyer Turku works the Perno yard at Turku in Finland, a site with shipbuilding roots stretching back centuries and, under earlier owners, the birthplace of Royal Caribbean's Freedom and Oasis classes. The modern company dates from 2014, when Germany's Meyer Werft acquired the former STX Finland yard — taking full ownership in 2015 — and renamed it Meyer Turku. The 12 Phase 1 ships here are all large, recent and built in series: TUI Cruises' Mein Schiff fleet, the LNG-powered Excellence-class Costa Smeralda and Costa Toscana, Carnival's Excel-class Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, and above all the Icon class. Icon of the Seas and her sisters, at 248,663 gross tons, are the largest cruise ships ever built — proof that Turku, like Papenburg, now specialises in the biggest prototypes in the industry.
