Overview

Silver Endeavour is a Polar Class 6 luxury expedition cruise ship operated by Silversea Cruises. She was built in Germany for Crystal Cruises as Crystal Endeavor — the American spelling — and entered service in July 2021 as what her builders described as the world's largest ice-class expedition yacht. When Crystal's parent company collapsed in early 2022, the barely year-old ship was sold to the Royal Caribbean Group for Silversea, renamed with the British spelling Endeavour in honour of James Cook's HMS Endeavour, and relaunched in November 2022. Few modern ships have changed brands so young; fewer still were purpose-built, as she was, for the polar regions at the very top of the luxury market.

Key specifications

The frozen dataset gives IMO 9821873, a length of 164.5 m, hull number BN124 and a speed of 18.0 knots, but leaves tonnage, beam and capacity blank. Her reference article supplies the missing scale: 20,449 GT, a beam of about 25 m, capacity for about 200 guests in all-suite accommodation and a crew of about 209 — a near one-to-one ratio. Diesel-electric propulsion through two ABB Azipod units, a Polar Class 6 (PC6) ice rating and a design speed of up to about 20 knots in open water complete the picture; the dataset's 18.0 knots reads as a cruising figure. These researched figures are given here, in prose, because the dataset omits them, and the omissions are logged with this batch.

Design and construction

The ship was ordered in August 2016 as the expedition flagship of Genting Hong Kong's expanding Crystal brand. She was laid down on 9 February 2018 at the Stralsund yard of MV Werften — the dataset's builder field, "Meyer Wismar", reflects the yard group's later identity rather than the builder named at construction, and the point is logged. Floated out in December 2019, she was built to PC6, the highest ice class then applied to a luxury expedition ship, with a strengthened hull, generous Zodiac and submarine-handling facilities, a helicopter deck and the hotel fittings of a small luxury cruise ship rather than a converted research vessel. Reported build costs vary widely between sources, so no figure is stated here.

Naming, launch and maiden voyage

The dataset's launch year of 2021 records her entry into service rather than her float-out, which took place on 22 December 2019. Christened as Crystal Endeavor on 26 June 2021 at the shipyard by Manuela Schwesig, prime minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, she made her maiden voyage on 17 July 2021, beginning with voyages from Reykjavík, Iceland. As Silver Endeavour she was renamed at a second christening in Antarctica's Lemaire Channel in November 2022, where her godmother, the polar explorer Felicity Aston, broke a bottle sculpted from ice against the hull — a ceremony adapted to Antarctic environmental rules.

Career by operator

Period Name Operator
2021–2022 Crystal Endeavor Crystal Cruises
2022–present Silver Endeavour Silversea Cruises

Her Crystal career lasted barely seven months. After her Icelandic debut she repositioned for a first Antarctic season in November 2021, which was cut short in February 2022 when Crystal suspended operations amid the collapse of Genting Hong Kong. The ship was sold to Silversea in a deal valued at a reported $275 million in mid-2022; Royal Caribbean Group undertook to protect the deposits of guests who rebooked from the failed Crystal programme. She entered Silversea service in November 2022, taking over the expedition role of the line's Silver Explorer.

Onboard character

Silver Endeavour was designed around a single proposition: that a ship able to work in polar ice should offer the accommodation, dining and service of a top-end luxury vessel. Her suites are large, many with verandas; her public rooms include observation and explorer lounges oriented to lectures and briefings; and her expedition equipment — a large fleet of Zodiacs, kayaks and, as built, a submersible and helicopters — is integrated into the ship rather than carried as an afterthought. The ice-class hull, dynamic positioning and high crew ratio are as much a part of her character as the interiors: she is a working expedition platform finished to yacht standards.

Major refits and incidents

No casualty or major incident involving the ship is recorded in the sources consulted. Her defining disruption was commercial rather than nautical: the February 2022 shutdown of Crystal Cruises, which ended her first Antarctic season early and left a nearly new ship idle until the Silversea sale. A refurbishment is reported in secondary fleet listings for 2023, her first full year under Silversea, aligning her interiors and branding with her new operator. Routine expedition-season maintenance otherwise defines her refit pattern.

Sister ships and class

The dataset lists her as an "Endeavor-class" ship, but in practice she is a one-off: the only expedition newbuild completed for Crystal Cruises, and no sister was built. Within Silversea she sits at the head of an expedition sub-fleet that otherwise consists of converted ships — Silver Cloud, Silver Wind and Silver Origin among them — which makes her the line's only purpose-built polar flagship. Her namesake relationship is with HMS Endeavour rather than with any sister hull.

Fate and where she is now

The dataset lists her status as active and her fate as operating, formerly Crystal Endeavour, and her reference article records her in service with Silversea, registered at Nassau in the Bahamas. Rescued from the wreck of her original operator within a year of her debut, she has settled into the role she was built for — Silversea's newest and most capable expedition ship, working the polar seasons for which her PC6 hull was designed.
