Celebrity Cruises was created in April 1988 by the Greek Chandris group, which had been involved in cruise traffic since the 1960s, as a deliberately more upmarket brand; it later became part of the Royal Caribbean group, and the stylised X on its funnels remains the Chandris initial. Celebrity has consistently positioned itself at the premium end of mainstream cruising, with design-led ships and a stronger emphasis on dining and interiors than its mass-market contemporaries. The fleet below falls into three clear generations. The four Millennium-class ships, launched around 2000, measure about 91,000 GT; the five Solstice-class ships that followed are about 122,000 to 125,000 GT; and the Edge class, beginning with Celebrity Edge in 2018, runs from about 131,000 to 141,000 GT and introduced the line's most distinctive modern architecture. The outlier is Celebrity Flora, a 5,922 GT expedition ship built for a single, specialised role within an otherwise ocean-going fleet.
