Meyer Werft

Meyer Werft builds its cruise ships far from the sea, at Papenburg in Germany, where the family yard founded in 1795 is now in its seventh generation. After wooden sailing ships, iron steamers, ferries and gas carriers, Meyer delivered its first cruise ship, Homeric, in 1986, and has since specialised entirely in large, complex passenger ships built inside two vast covered building docks. Completed ships travel some 36 kilometres down the River Ems to the North Sea. The 58 Phase 1 ships here trace that rise: Norwegian Cruise Line's Jewel and Breakaway ships, AIDA's Sphinx class, Celebrity's Solstice class, Royal Caribbean's Quantum class — for years among the largest cruise ships afloat — Disney's Dream and Wish classes, and the LNG-powered Excellence ships AIDAnova and Iona. Papenburg is known above all for prototypes built in series.
